Stelios Haji-Ioannou Biography and Career:

Born on February 14, 1967, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou is a successful businessman who hails from the Greek Cypriot community. The low-cost airline easyJet and the Stelmar shipping line were both founded by him using start-up funding supplied by his father, Loucas. He was born into a rich ship-owning family and is most known for his development of both of these companies. easyJet was established in 1995, marking the beginning of a succession of businesses that were marketed under the “easy” name. These businesses were administered by easyGroup, and Haji-Ioannou served as the chairperson of the company.

Haji-Ioannou, who prides himself on being a “serial entrepreneur,” began his career in the shipping industry in 1988, when he began working for Troodos Shipping Co. Ltd., which was already a prosperous enterprise. To establish his shipping firm, Stelmar Shipping, Haji-Ioannou inherited thirty million pounds from his father when he was twenty-five years old. In the year 2001, Haji-Ioannou made the firm available for trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

The OSG Group purchased Stelmar Shipping in 2005 for a price that was around $1.3 billion. In April of 1991, a VLCC oil tanker owned by Troodos was involved in a tragedy that resulted in six fatalities and spilled about 50,000 tons of crude oil into the ocean. This event is considered to be the most catastrophic ecological disaster that has ever occurred in the Mediterranean.

The M/T Haven was an old vessel that had been originally known as the Amoco Haven. It was the sister ship of the ill-fated Amoco Cadiz, which had sunk in 1978. In addition to being accused of pressuring witnesses and trying to pay them, Haji-Ioannou was taken into custody in Italy and charged with manslaughter. He was also accused of bad upkeep. Haji-Ioannou said that the disaster was caused by a mistake made by one of the crew members who was still alive.

Their father and he were both found not guilty by the jury. Additionally, subsequent legal claims for compensation were rejected by the courts as well. In 1995, when Haji-Ioannou was just 28 years old, he established easyJet, which initially included a service that operated between Luton and Scotland. In the year 2000, easyJet PLC had a partial public offering on the London Stock Exchange.

At the time of the 9th of May 2019, he and his family continue to be the airline’s biggest single stockholders, accounting for 34% of the company’s total capitalization. Through his private investment company, the easyGroup, Haji-Ioannou can do business. The easyGroup is the owner of the ‘easy’ brand and licenses it to several other ‘easy’-branded companies, all of which include the airline.

Through his encouragement of company owners to adopt the “easy” brand for their firms, Haji-Ioannou continues to broaden the scope of his commercial activities, mostly in the travel and leisure industry. Haji-Ioannou was reportedly working on Fastjet, a new low-cost airline that would serve routes inside Africa, as part of a joint venture with Lonrho plc, according to a story that became public in September of 2011.

The airline began its operations on November 29, 2012, using Airbus A319 aircraft as its launch vehicle. In 2009, Haji-Ioannou filed a lawsuit against Ryanair after the airline published advertisements in The Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, as well as on Ryanair’s website, throughout January and February. One of the advertisements included a photo of Haji-Ioannou dressed up as Pinocchio, and it referred to him as “easyJet’s Mr. Late Again.”

The issue was finally resolved outside of court, and Haji-Ioannou was awarded an official apology from the airline as well as the amount of fifty thousand pounds, which he declared he would give to his charitable foundation after the settlement. Haji-Ioannou resigned from his position on the board of directors of EasyJet in the year 2010, to exert pressure on the management of the firm to abandon their growth ambitions.

The following is an excerpt from an interview that he gave to Management Today: “EasyJet is considered to be a huge success, which I am happy about because I own the brand.” However, easyJet is a publicly traded subsidiary of the corporation. The share price has fluctuated up and down as the company has grown and as various events have taken place; yet, on the whole, it has been moving in a sideways direction.

Following that, he continued by saying, “Basically, it has not created any shareholder value for the past ten years.”Haji-Ioannou said in 2013 that he had grown “increasingly concerned” about the development ambitions of easyJet. To voice his opposition to the proposed acquisition of further aircraft, he announced that he had sold 200,000 shares in easyJet. His siblings have also sold their shares in the same manner.

In April of 2020, Haji-Ioannou made a public request for the dismissal of EasyJet PLC CEO Johan Lundgren and chairman John Barton due to what he refers to be a “deliberate mistake” in the company’s decision to not terminate a £4.5 billion contract for 107 aircraft from Airbus. The “services to entrepreneurship” that Haji-Ioannou has provided have earned him a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Birthday Honours presentation in 2006.
