Suzanne Somers Biography and Career:

Suzanne Marie Somers is an American actress, novelist, singer, entrepreneur, and champion of health issues. She was born Suzanne Mahoney in the United States on October 16, 1946,. She is most known for her roles as Chrissy Snow on Three’s Company and Carol Foster Lambert on Step by Step, both of which she played on television.

Later in life, Somers embarked on a career as a writer, penning many books in self-help, one of which, Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones (2006), is an exposé on bioidentical hormone replacement treatment. She has written two autobiographies, four books about dieting, and one collection of poetry.

It has been said that Somers’ views on some medical topics, as well as her endorsement of the Wiley Protocol, which has been referred to as “scientifically unproven and dangerous,” have been subject to criticism. The plot centered on their attempts to circumvent the prohibition.

The show was an immediate ratings phenomenon, which ultimately led to the production of a spin-off series (with Norman Fell and Audra Lindley) that lasted for just a few seasons. When the fifth season of Three’s Company started airing in the latter half of 1980, Suzanne Somers wanted a significant raise in her income, from $30,000 to $150,000 for each episode, and ten percent ownership of the show’s revenues.

Those familiar with the circumstances thought Somers’ disobedience was primarily owing to the influences of her husband, Hamel. After ABC turned down her request for a pay increase, Suzanne Somers declined to participate in the second and fourth episodes of the season, using reasons such as a fractured rib as her justification. She fulfilled the remaining obligations of her contract by completing the remaining episodes of the season, even though part being barely one minute every episode.

Her character only appears in the ending tag of the episode, in which Chrissy phones the three at their apartment when she is at her parents’ house. Somers filed a lawsuit against ABC for $2 million, claiming that her reputation in the entertainment industry had been harmed due to the network’s decision to dismiss her from the program and terminate her contract.

An arbitrator concluded that Somers was entitled to $30,000 as compensation for a single missing episode for which she had not been paid. This decision resulted in the settlement of the case. Successive verdicts were in favor of the network as well as the producers. Somers claims that she was sacked from the show because she demanded to be paid the same amount as renowned male television actors of the day like Alan Alda and Carroll O’Connor.

In 1983, Suzanne Somers secured a contract with Columbia Pictures Television for her production company, known at the time as Hamel/Somers Productions. After not communicating with one another for twenty years, Three’s Company co-stars Suzanne Somers and John Ritter were finally able to mend their relationship in the months leading up to Ritter’s death in 2003.
