Toni Collette Biography and Career:

Toni Collette is an Australian actress who rose to prominence with her roles in the 1994 comedy-drama Muriel’s Wedding and the 1999 mystery thriller The Sixth Sense. Toni Collette, the oldest child of Bob and Judy Collett, was born on November 1, 1972, and she grew up in the Sydney suburbs of Glebe and Blacktown. Her father was a truck driver, and her mother was a customer service representative. Therefore, she comes from a working-class background. Two younger brothers are in her family.

She got her start in theater in a high school performance of Godspell at Blacktown Girls High School, where she studied. She dropped out of high school at age fourteen to accept a scholarship to perform with the Australian Theatre for Young People in 1989.

When Toni Collette landed a part in the Neil Armfield–directed production of Uncle Vanya (August–September 1992) with the Sydney Theatre Company, she abruptly ended her studies at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), which she had begun in 1991.

Toni Collette and her husband, musician Dave Galafassi, had their children, a girl named Sage Florence in 2008 and a boy named Arlo Robert in 2011 in 2003. She advocates for several non-profits, including Amnesty International, Feeding America, and Doctors Without Borders. She has also done charitable work, raising money for organizations like OzHarvest and Cure Our Kids.

Irish charitable and humanitarian organization Concern Worldwide named Toni Collette their worldwide ambassador in 2014. Toni Collette had previously been on stage in Operation Holy Mountain in 1990 and in the musical A Little Night Music at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House, from 1990 to 1991 before being cast as Natasha in Uncle Vanya. A Pocketful of Hula Dreams, Away, and The Frogs were among the 1992 plays she was in.

She made her television debut in 1988 as a vocalist on the variety program Blah Blah Blah, and in 1990, she starred in an episode of the drama series A Country Practice. In 1992, she made her film debut in the supporting cast of the comedy-drama Spotswood.

The comedy-drama film Muriel’s Wedding, in which Toni Collette portrayed the titular character, was her breakout performance two years later. She gained 42 (40.1) pounds for the role, but the attention she received from the film and the awards she received in both the United States and Australia were well worth the sacrifice.

The following year, 1996, saw the release of three highly regarded films: the romantic comedy Emma, the drama Lilian’s Story, and the comedy-drama Cos. For the movie Cos, she also sang three songs that other artists initially performed. From 1997 to 1998, she was in several films in which she had a supporting part, including Clockwatchers, The Boys, and Velvet Goldmine. In 1997, she starred as the title character in the romantic comedy Diana & Me.

She played Lynn Sear, a distraught mother whose kid can see ghosts, in 1999’s The Sixth Sense, a supernatural psychological thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The film’s success brought her even more fame across the world. After appearing in musicals like Summer of the Aliens (1993) and King Lear (1994), Toni Collette eventually made her Broadway debut in the role of Queenie in The Wild Party (2000). She cut nine songs for the Broadway show.

In 2000, she starred in many films, including Shaft, Hotel Splendide, and The Magic Pudding (voice part). She had a role in the TV movie Dinner with Friends the following year. She had a breakout year in 2002, with critically acclaimed turns in the romantic comedy-drama About a Boy and the psychological thriller The Hours.

Her performance as Sandy Edwards in the feature romantic drama film Japanese Story in 2003 garnered critical acclaim. She had roles in two comedies the following year, The Last Shot and Connie and Carla. Her vocal talents were again used in the most recent picture.

Toni Collette followed her performance in In Her Shoes with a role as the dysfunctional family matriarch Sheryl Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine (2006). Her work on the joint HBO/BBC miniseries Tsunami: The Aftermath dates back to the same year. She was nominated for an award for both the film and the TV movie.

Toni Collette & the Finish, her band, debuted with the album Beautiful Awkward Pictures in 2006. The album’s eleven songs were all written by her. She was cast as the title character, Tara Gregson, in the dark webcomic series United States of Tara 2009. The program aired for three seasons, during which Collette received several accolades for portraying a lady with dissociative identity disorder.

Following the horror thriller Fright Night (2011), Toni Collette starred in the comedies Mental (2012) and Hitchcock (2012), as well as the biographical drama Enough Said (2012) and the coming-of-age comedy-drama The Way, Way Back (2013). She starred as Ellen Sanders in the CBS drama series Hostages for one season in 2013–2014. She made another Broadway appearance as Jennifer Jones in 2014’s The Realistic Joneses.

Tammy, A Long Way Down, Miss You Already, Krampus, Imperium, and XXX: Return of Xander Cage are just a few of the films she appeared in between 2014 and 2017. Together with her talent manager in the United States, Jen Turner, she launched her own production business in 2017. The following year, she starred as the lead in the BBC One drama series Wanderlust. She delivered a fantastic performance in the supernatural horror picture Hereditary.

She has portrayed Detective Grace Rasmussen in the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable and joined an ensemble cast in the humorous whodunit film Knives Out, both released in 2019.
