Tony Atlas Biography and Career:

Anthony White, born on April 23, 1954, is an American bodybuilder, powerlifter, and professional wrestler best known by his ring name, Tony Atlas. White is a multi-talented athlete who has won several titles and championships in these three sports. In addition, he is known by the labels “Mr. USA” (a bodybuilding title he has held three times), “Black Superman” (a nom de guerre), and Saba Simba (an alter ego moniker).

He returned to WWE in an on-screen managerial capacity, this time for the company’s ECW brand, which has since been discontinued. In the middle of 2012, he re-upped his commitment to WWE by signing a Legends deal. In 1974, Atlas began competing in wrestling for the National Wrestling Alliance in the World Wide/Mid-Atlantic region. On July 10, he made his ring debut by teaming up with Bob Bruggers to compete in a tag team battle against Art Neilson and The Blue Scorpion. The duel ended when Atlas completed a sleeper hold on The Blue Scorpion, earning the victory for his side.

During his career, he was employed by World Championship Wrestling (WCW), the National Wrestling Alliance’s Jim Crockett Promotions, the World Wrestling Council (WWC), World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), the American Wrestling Association (AWA), and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Throughout his career, he also competed in World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW). His frequent companions included Tommy Rich (under the alias “TNT”), Dick Murdoch, and Rocky Johnson.

In addition, he was the first to press slam and pin Hulk Hogan, even though Hogan’s foot was on the rope at the time, but the referee did not see it.Atlas won the NWA Georgia Tag Team Title with Tommy Rich when he was a member of the NWA. After that, he joined forces with Thunderbolt Patterson, Kevin Sullivan, Rocky Johnson, and Mr. Wrestling II.He began his wrestling career with New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 1982.

Between 1982 and 1983, he competed for the Universal Wrestling Federation, owned by Bill Watts. After that, from 1983 to 1984, he resided in Georgia while continuing his wrestling career in St. Louis. On October 23, 1979, Atlas debuted in the World Wrestling Federation by winning over Johnny Rodz during a taping of Championship Wrestling. One of his first feuds was with Jesse “The Body” Ventura, which centered on who had the most impressive body.

In 1983, he joined up with Rocky Johnson to compete as The Soul Patrol, and they won the WWF World Tag Team Championship by defeating The Wild Samoans. This achievement made them the first black champions in the history of the WWF. Atlas’ last bout occurred on May 16, 1984, in Lacey Township, New Jersey. Before then, he had been defeated by Adrian Adonis and Dick Murdoch, who went on to win the championship, and Atlas had missed previous matches due to his drug addiction.

Atlas reappeared in Verne Gagne’s AWA around two months after he had left his position with the World Wrestling Federation. On his first bout, which took place on July 13 at a house event in Denver, Colorado, he was victorious over Chris Markoff. Atlas earned a push upon entering the company, which marked a swing in the other way from what was happening at the time with the AWA, which was being looted for talent by the WWF.

Before losing to King Kong Bundy on August 11 in Indianapolis, Indiana, he went through July unbeaten over “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal, Larry Zbyszko, and Jake Milliman. However, he was ultimately defeated by Bundy. The only other time Atlas lost in the singles competition was when he was disqualified after a match against Nick Bockwinkel. On October 10, 1984, he joined up with The Crusher and challenged the reigning AWA Tag-Team Champions, The Road Warriors, for a chance at the belts. They won by disqualification, allowing them to challenge for the titles.

After ten days, he linked up with Jim Brunzell for another attempt to take on the Road Warriors, but this time they were unsuccessful. On October 28, he wrestled and won his last bout for the organization, which was against Tom Scott. After that, he went back to wrestling for the World Wrestling Federation. Atlas returned to the WWF the same day he left the AWA. His first battle back was a television taping for All-Star Wrestling in Hamilton, Ontario, where he won by pinfall over Rene Goulet in a bout broadcast on November 17.

After returning to the WWF, Atlas was placed in the middle of the card and went unbeaten against opponents like Mr. Fuji, The Spoiler, The Iron Sheik, and Moondog Rex. At the Steel Cage Turmoil round-robin tournament in Hartford, Connecticut, on November 23, 1984 (a precursor to the King of the Ring tournaments held later in the decade at annual house show events), he defeated Bob Orton. He won a non-title victory over WWF Intercontinental Champion Greg Valentine. However, he suffered his first defeat on his comeback when he lost to David Schultz.

He would not suffer another defeat for many months, as he would only be pinned again once Paul Orndorff defeated him on Prime Time Wrestling on March 19, 1985. This would be his lone loss during this period. At this moment, Atlas started his descent into the role of a mid-card performer and would lose several matches, including contests against Bret Hart, Greg Valentine, Don Muraco, and Roddy Piper. In addition, the organization programmed him to participate in several temporary tag teams with Ivan Putski, Lanny Poffo, and George Wells.
