Tony Danza Biography and Career:
Actor Tony Danza is best known for his roles in some of television’s most popular and long-running shows, including Taxi (1978-1983) and Who’s the Boss? (1984-1992). Daniella Danza was raised in Brooklyn, New York by her mother, Anne (Cammisa), and her father, Matty.
Both his mother and father were of Italian heritage, and he was born into an Italian family. Wrestling scholarships at the University of Dubuque in Iowa pushed him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in history education at Long Island’s Malverne. Rocky Graziano was the inspiration for him to become a professional boxer before he became a teacher.
To enter the New York Golden Gloves, he changed his name to “Dangerous” Tony Danza. As soon as he finished school, he began his professional boxing career on August 13, 1976. Danza’s walk-in slugging style made him a fan favorite as a middleweight. To date, he has a 9-3 record, with 7 first-round knockouts. Tony Banta was spotted during a gym session for the ABC television show Taxi (1978). Despite scoring two knockouts in 1978 and 1979, Danza quit boxing after failing to get a shot at the world title and instead concentrated on his acting career.
In television history, Taxi has become a household name thanks to its critical praise. In 1984, he appeared in Who’s the Boss?, an ABC sitcom that lasted for eight seasons and shattered all syndication records. Sitcom characters have made him famous. He was nominated for an Emmy for his appearance as a guest actor on The Practice (1997), and got critical praise for his portrayal in the Broadway revival of Eugene O’Neill’s “The Iceman Cometh.” Hudson Street (1995) and The Tony Danza Show (1997), for which he served as executive producer, were also part of his resume.
In addition, he has been in the television movies 12 Angry Men (1997), The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon (1998), The Wonderful World of Disney: Noah (1998), The Girl Gets Moe (1997), North Shore Fish (1997), and Deadly Whispers (1997). The short film Mamamia was also written, directed, and starred in by him (1995). He was nominated for an Outer Critic’s Circle Award for his debut in Wrong Turn at Lungfish (1993). The Iceman Cometh, starring Kevin Spacey, Arthur Miller’s Tony Award-winning drama A View from the Bridge, and I Remember You are among his other theatre credits.
After a hiatus from performing, Tony recently returned to Paper Mill Playhouse to star alongside fellow Tony Award nominee Rob McClure (Chaplin) and Brynn O’Malley in the much-anticipated and critically acclaimed blockbuster hit musical Honeymoon In Vegas (Annie). The musical is written by Andrew Bergman (Fletch, The Freshman, Blazing Saddles, Soap Dish, The In-Laws) and has music and lyrics by Tony Award-winning Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years).
A love letter from The New York Times comparing Tony’s performance to “the cooler-than-cool attitude” of Frank Sinatra praised both the play and Tony’s performance. In 1995, he debuted his song-and-dance theatrical show in Atlantic City, where he received acclaim for his performance. He later toured the country, from Las Vegas to New York, with the show. As Joseph Gordon-father Levitt’s character’s in Gordon-much-buzzed-about Levitt’s and lauded directorial debut, Don Jon, Tony returned to the big screen in 2013. Fall of 2013 saw the release of the picture starring Gordon-Levitt, Danza, Moore, Brie Larson, and Scarlett Johansson.
In 2009-2010, Tony taught tenth-grade English at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. This was his toughest position yet. Teach, a seven-part A&E documentary series on a real-life teacher, premiered last year and received great acclaim. When Tony’s book was published in September 2012, Crown Publishers (a part of Random House) launched it, it became a hotly anticipated and critically lauded account of his year as a new teacher at Northeast High School. It went on sale in September of that year. When AARP The Magazine, the world’s largest-circulation magazine for those over 50, presented Tony with their Inspire Award in 2010, he was overjoyed.
People who inspire others to action via their unique ideas, enthusiasm, and tenacity are honored at the Inspire Awards When the Weinstein Company staged a landmark benefit concert for Hurricane Sandy relief at Madison Square Garden in December of 2012, Tony was one of the stars who performed. “We’re all in this together, pal,” Tony’s father would tell him.
