In April 2016, the National League honored Story as the Rookie of the Month for the National League. In 2017, he led the National League in strikeouts, while in 2018, he led the National League in power-speed number, extra-base hits, and longest home run of the season. After playing with the Rockies for six years, he became eligible for free agency and subsequently signed a six-year deal with the Red Sox.

During the 2011 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft, the Colorado Rockies used the 45th overall pick to choose Story as their shortstop for the team. The story was selected in the first round of the draft. The story decided against attending LSU and instead signed with the Rockies, where he will get a signing bonus of $915,000.After signing with the team, he played for the Casper Ghosts of the Pioneer League’s Rookie level, with a batting average of.268.

At the end of the 2015 season, he ended with an on-base percentage of.350 and 20 home runs for New Britain and Albuquerque. He finished spring training with a batting average of.340, which was good enough to earn him a spot on the Rockies’ Opening Day roster. In only his second at-bat in the big leagues, Story smashed a three-run home run against Zack Greinke to collect the first hit of his professional career. Charlie Reilly and Joe Cunningham also did it. He became the first player in the history of central League Baseball to smash a home run in each of his first three games and a home run in each of his first four hits when he launched a two-run home run off Patrick Corbin of the Arizona Diamondbacks on his third day in the main leagues.
