In the latter part of the year 1977, she had a role in the historical drama film Julia, which concentrated on World War II. In the movie, Vanessa portrayed the part of the eponymous character, who was a lady whose life was taken by the Nazis.

She was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the role. Despite this, the movie was criticized for being pro-Palestinian, and the Jewish Defence League even went so far as to burn the effigies of the actress in an act of protest against her Oscar candidacy.
