Zak Hardaker Biography and Career:

Zak Hardaker (born 17 October 1991) is an English professional rugby league footballer who currently plays on loan for the Castleford Tigers of the Super League, having previously played for the Leeds Rhinos. Former Featherstone Rovers and Leeds Rhinos players, Hardaker has also represented the Penrith Panthers in the National Rugby League and the Leeds Rhinos in the Super League.

While he prefers to play at fullback, he is capable of playing at the center and on the flank as well. Hardaker, who has represented England at the international level, has won two Challenge Cups and three Super League titles with Leeds United. His individual accomplishments include being chosen to the Super League Dream Team on two occasions and being awarded the 2015 Man of Steel by the league.

Hardaker joined Featherstone Rovers from the local amateur side Featherstone Lions after graduating from Carleton High School in Pontefract. He had played for Featherstone Lions. The former Knottingley Rockware player had previously played for his hometown club before getting a professional contract with Featherstone Rovers.

Against Hunslet on his Featherstone Rovers debut in 2010, he scored a hat-trick of tries, and he went on to score 22 tries in 14 games across all competitions in his first season as a professional player. This featured two tries in Rovers’ 23–22 Co-operative Grand Final loss to Halifax, which occurred in extra time. At the conclusion of the season, he was awarded joint Co-operative Championship Young Player of the Year, with Gareth Moore of Batley Bulldogs, for the second consecutive season.

Hardaker joined the Leeds Rhinos in October 2010 for a transfer fee estimated to be approximately £60,000. He was given the number 27 jersey as part of the deal. His pre-season training with the Rhinos senior team included two appearances in pre-season friendly before he signed a two-year deal with Rovers to become a full-time player in 2011. He went on to make another 5 appearances for Featherstone, scoring a total of 5 tries.

Hardaker was recalled to Leeds in March 2011 as a result of injuries to wingers Ben Jones-Bishop and Lee Smith. He made his Super League debut against St. Helens at Headingley that month. As part of Leeds’ 30–16 defeat, Hardaker scored a try. In the next season, Hardaker made just a few appearances for Leeds, with perhaps his greatest performance coming in the play-off game against Huddersfield Giants, in which he scored a hat-trick and was named man of the match in a 34–28 victory. At Old Trafford in Manchester, he also scored the winning try in the 2011 Super League Grand Final, as Leeds overcame St. Helens 32–16 to win the championship.

To replace Keith Senior, who had worn the number 4 jersey for many years, Hardaker had the honor of wearing the number 4 for the 2012 season. After Brent Webb suffered an injury in the second part of the season, he was switched to fullback, where he performed well as Leeds successfully defended their Super League championship. Hardaker was named the Super League Young Player of the Year in 2012 for his outstanding performance.

Hardaker sustained a fractured thumb during Leeds’ 42–14 win over Salford at the start of 2013, which forced him to miss the 2013 World Club Challenge match against Melbourne Storm.

During the 2014 Challenge Cup season, Hardaker was a member of the Rhinos side that won the trophy, and he was named to his first Super League Dream Team at the conclusion of the season. In addition, his performance earned him a return to the England team for the 2014 Four Nations, albeit he did not play in the tournament due to injury.

He maintained his excellent form in 2015, and he was an important member of the Rhinos club that won the 2015 Challenge Cup. As a result, he was awarded the Man of Steel title at the conclusion of the season, being the first Leeds player to do so since Iestyn Harris in 1998. Hardaker sought a move away from Leeds in June 2016 as a result of the Rhinos’ dismal run, which saw them finish at the bottom of the Championship table.
