Adam Silver Biography and Career:
New York is the place of Adam Silver’s birth on April 25th, 1962. He grew up in the Westchester County hamlet of Rye, where he quickly became a devoted New York Knicks fan. After finishing high school in Rye, Silver enrolled at Duke University, where he would earn a Bachelor of Arts in 1984. After spending two years as a legislative assistant for Oregon’s U.S. Representative Les AuCoin, Adam Silver enrolled in law school at the University of Chicago in 1988.
Once Adam Silver finished law school, he clerked for the Honorable Kimba Wood of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, where he received valuable expertise in the legal sector. After that, in 1992, Silver began his career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) after working as a litigation associate at the New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Since joining the NBA, Adam Silver has served as the league’s special assistant to the commissioner, NBA chief of staff, senior VP of NBA Entertainment, and president of NBA Entertainment.
During his tenure with NBA Entertainment, Adam Silver worked on a number of documentaries. Movies like “Michael Jordan to the Max,” an IMAX documentary published in 2000, are examples.
Adam Silver was named one of the 100 most influential persons in the world by TIME and CNN before becoming NBA commissioner in 2014. The Sporting News also recognized him as one of the “100 Most Powerful People in Sports” on many occasions before he was promoted to his current post. Once David Stern’s deputy, Adam Silver took over as NBA commissioner on February 1, 2014.
Three months later, when Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was discovered on film using racial slurs, Adam Silver was thrust into the center of his first crisis. The Clippers faced up against the Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. Silver took swift and firm action, kicking Sterling out of the league for good and subsequently relieving him of his own position in the organization. To add insult to injury, Sterling was fined $2 million. Many people were pleased to see that Adam Silver is not like David Stern, who frequently ignored the wrong behavior of his owners when it concerned the Sterling issue.
Importantly, the players appreciate Adam Silver for how quickly the league responded to the Donald Sterling crisis, which will likely help the league in 2017 when it comes time to negotiate a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Businessman, lawyer, and sports executive Adam Silver was born in the United States on April 25, 1962. He is the current commissioner of the National Basketball Association (NBA). This is Silver’s sixth turn in the role (NBA).
He has worked in numerous capacities within the National Basketball Association since joining in 1992. Under his predecessor and guide, David Stern, he was elevated to chief operations officer and deputy commissioner in 2006. When Stern retired in 2014, he was replaced as commissioner by Silver.
During his time as commissioner, the league’s financial and geographic reach continued to grow, especially in China. Silver gained notoriety in 2014 when, in response to racial statements made by Donald Sterling, he forced Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers. After some time, Silver permanently disallowed Sterling from playing. Meanwhile, Silver gained worldwide recognition for maintaining the NBA’s impartiality throughout the riots in Hong Kong in 2019.
After eight years as the NBA’s Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer, Silver was promoted to Commissioner. As such, he was present during the league’s discussions that resulted in the creation of the Women’s National Basketball Association and the NBA Development League, as well as the league’s negotiations with the National Basketball Players Association for the last three CBAs.
N.B.A. China was founded, and the NBA partnered with Turner Broadcasting to manage NBA internet properties. Silver has previously spent eight years in the role of president and chief operating officer for NBA Entertainment. Silver has worked for the NBA since 1992 and has held numerous positions inside the league, including Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for NBA Entertainment, NBA Chief of Staff, and Special Assistant to the Commissioner. On October 25, 2012, David Stern announced that he will be stepping down as NBA Commissioner on February 1, 2014. He backed Adam Silver to replace him.
Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was caught on camera making racial slurs to his fiancée on April 25, 2014. The footage was released by TMZ Sports. In response, Silver said Sterling was permanently banned from the NBA on April 29, 2014. To top it all off, Silver fined Sterling the maximum $2.5 million that the NBA constitution allows for a suspension. Silver convinced the Clippers’ other owners to vote to remove Sterling as owner, effectively eliminating Sterling’s control over the team. Eventually, Sterling lost his ownership stake in the Clippers and was forced to sell.
Sterling was banned from entering Clipper’s arenas and NBA events in general. It was among the harshest penalties ever imposed on the proprietor of a major sports franchise. Silver advocated for the legalization and regulation of sports betting in an opinion piece published in The New York Times on November 13, 2014. In the article, he argues that sports betting should be “taken out of the underground and into the sunlight, where it can be effectively monitored and regulated.” As a supporter of regulated legalized sports betting, Silver is in favor of this change.
General Manager Daryl Morey of the Houston Rockets tweeted his support for the 2019 demonstrations on October 4, 2019. Morey deleted the post after some reflection. Separate statements from Morey and the NBA were issued in reaction to the initial tweet on October 6.
