Following Miles’ resignation, Frank Faulkinberry was named as the next head coach of MTSU. During his time as head coach, the Blue Raiders had a 33–26–4 overall record. On May 13, 1933, Faulkinberry was discovered shot to death in his garage, the reason of his death is considered to be suicide.
E. M. Waller coached the Blue Raiders for two seasons, compiling a 3–14–1 record during his tenure. After two seasons, Waller was forced to resign as a result of the team’s struggles. The Blue Raiders were coached by Johnny Floyd for four seasons beginning in 1935 and ending in 1937. The Blue Raiders finished the season with a record of 30–8–1 under his direction. Midgett was the head coach of the Blue Raiders for four seasons (MTSU did not field a football team from 1943–to 1945 due to World War II). Midgett was a four-year starter. Midgett steered the Blue Raiders to a 4–4 record in the 1940 season. The Blue Raiders had a 4–3–1 season in 1941, followed by a 4–2–1 campaign in 1942, and a 6–2–1 campaign in 1946.
Charles Murphy is the longest-tenured and most successful head coach in the history of Middle Tennessee State University football, amassing a 155–63–8 record in 22 seasons as the Mountaineers’ head coach. Four undefeated seasons (1949, 1957, 1959, and 1965) were compiled by the Blue Raiders under Murphy’s direction, in addition to 17 winning seasons and four appearances in bowl games. Murphy was asked to resign from his position at Middle Tennessee State University following a 2–8 season in 1968.
Following Murphy as head coach of the Blue Raiders, Donald Fuoss took over, although he only lasted one season, going 1–9 in 1969, which led to his dismissal. Bill Peck took over as head coach of Murfreesboro in 1970 and immediately saw an improvement in the team’s performance. The Blue Raiders finished with a 6–3–1 record during his debut season. In 1971, Middle Tennessee State University had a 7–4 record. Following that, the team had a 7–3–1 record in 1972, a 4–7 record in 1973, and a 3–8 record in 1974. Peck was asked to leave following two consecutive losing seasons, thereby bringing his reign to an end.
Ben Hurt became the head coach of the Blue Raiders in 1975. In 1975, MTSU finished with a 4–7 record under his direction. This was followed by a 4–7 campaign the following year in 1976. Hurt’s Blue Raiders finished with a 3–8 record in 1977, which was followed by a 1–9–1 record in 1978, which resulted in Hurt being dismissed.
