Florida Atlantic Owls football Biography and Career:
Football is the most popular sport at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), and the Florida Atlantic Owls represent the school in the sport of American football. University of Toledo’s football team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as well as the East Division of Conference USA (CUSA). Willie Taggart is the head coach of the Owls.
Florida Atlantic has produced a co-championship team in the Sun Belt Conference in 2007, two Conference USA championship teams in 2017 and 2019, four postseason bowl appearances, and one trip in the I-AA Playoffs in 2003. In their home games, the Owls take the field at FAU Stadium, which has a capacity of 29,419 spectators.
Football at Florida Atlantic University debuted in 2001, with famed coach Howard Schnellenberger serving as the team’s head coach from 2001 through 2011. Schnellenberger was a former offensive coordinator with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins who, as head coach of the University of Miami football program, turned around a dormant program and won a national championship in his fifth season in 1983 after posting back-to-back nine-win seasons in 1980 and 1981. Schnellenberger also turned around the football program at Louisville, which went on to win the Fiesta Bowl in 1990 after being in shambles.
After participating in their first four seasons as an independent in NCAA Division I-AA, the Owls were promoted to Division I-A and the Sun Belt Conference in 2015. Since the 2013–14 academic year, Florida Atlantic University sports have participated in the Conference USA.
It was 1998 when Florida Atlantic University announced that it would be seeking the establishment of an NCAA football program and that Howard Schnellenberger would be in control of the team as both its director of football operations and head coach. Coach Schnellenberger took on the challenge of establishing a program from the ground up after achieving success in rebuilding teams at Miami and Louisville in the previous two years. Coach Schnellenberger, like his predecessors at Miami and Louisville, did not hold back when it came to setting lofty expectations and setting ambitious objectives for his newly formed school.
Coach Schnellenberger said that the objective of FAU football would be to play the finest opponents possible in order for the program to compete for a national title in Division I-A football even before the Owls played their first intercollegiate game. Coach Schnellenberger’s aggressive objectives were not out of the ordinary for a guy of his caliber. When the administration of the University of Louisville threatened to eliminate the football program, Schnellenberger made the bold (and now legendary) statement, “[We] are on a collision course with the national title.” “The only variable is the passage of time.”
The inaugural practice was conducted on August 29, 2000, at the Florida Atlantic University campus in Boca Raton, and a total of 164 students came out to try out for the squad. During the first practice on August 29, 2000, which was labeled the first scrimmage game, Florida Atlantic University resumed the tradition of the Homecoming King, this time adding the crowning of the King as part of the halftime celebrations.
Following his election as Homecoming King by the majority of the student population from across all five campuses at the time, Mr. Burns competed in a Q&A gauntlet alongside the top three candidates, which was conducted by a committee of students and faculty, after which the students and faculty voted to determine whether Mr. Burns would advance to the winner’s circle or whether the next candidate would win the crown.
He was being driven around the field of play by his chauffeur, who was driving an elegant Rolls-Royce convertible, waving to the 164 students in attendance, many of whom had voted for him. Wayne Burns was and continues to be the oldest Homecoming King to ever win the distinction at Florida Atlantic University. Florida Atlantic became the first independent club to compete in NCAA Division I-AA, which is now known as Division I FCS, for the 2001 season. Joe Robbie Stadium, now known as Hard Rock Stadium, hosted its first-ever intercollegiate match against Slippery Rock University, which the Owls lost 40–7 in front of a crowd of 25,632 supporters.
