Milwaukee Brewers Biography and Career:

The Milwaukee Brewers currently play in the National League (NL), but they spent their first 29 seasons (1969–1997) in the American League (AL). The Pilots were the name given to the team that would eventually become the Brewers when it was created in Seattle in 1969. After a disastrous first season, both financially and on the baseball field, the franchise was relocated to Milwaukee (which had previously hosted the Braves baseball franchise from 1953 to 1965), where it adopted the name of a long-standing local minor league team, the Brewers, to better reflect its new location.

The Brewers suffered in their early years in Milwaukee, finishing with a losing record in each of their first eight seasons in the city. The arrival of future Hall of Fame shortstop Robin Yount in 1974 signaled the beginning of the Brewers’ slow but steady turnaround, which was further aided in 1978 by the debut of another future Hall of Famer, infielder–designated hitter Paul Molitor, who played in the outfield as a designated hitter. Before capturing their first division title in 1981, the Brewers had three straight winning campaigns.

The following year, they won their only American League pennant and advanced to the World Series, where they were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. The Milwaukee Brewers went through a nine-season stretch of sub-par play following their World Series appearance, finishing no higher than third in their division for the whole time span. The Milwaukee Brewers won 92 games in 1992 and finished second in the American League East division, behind the eventual champion Toronto Blue Jays. However, the Brewers went on to suffer 12 consecutive losing seasons after that.

With the arrival of two expansion teams in 1998, Major League Baseball requested that the Milwaukee Brewers transfer from the American League to the National League, becoming Milwaukee the first team in the twentieth century to do so. In 2001, the team moved to a new stadium, Miller Park (later renamed American Family Field), and began playing there. In 2008, the Milwaukee Brewers, led by sluggers Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun, won 90 games and qualified for the postseason as the National League Wild Card (as the team with the best record among teams that did not win their division title).

It was the team’s first postseason appearance since 1982, and it marked the team’s first postseason appearance since 1982. In 2011, the Milwaukee Brewers set a new team record by winning 96 games. As a result of its success, it advanced to the National League Championship Series (NLCS), where it was eliminated by the Cardinals in six games. Following the team’s appearance in the National League Championship Series, Fielder left via free agency, and Braun became embroiled in a steroid scandal, causing the Brewers to fall out of contention until they unexpectedly rallied to finish within striking distance of qualifying for the postseason in 2017.

Milwaukee capitalized on that momentum in 2018, winning an NL-best 96 games and progressing to the third league championship series in the franchise’s history, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a seven-game series in the World Series. The Brewers returned to the postseason the following season but were ousted by the Cardinals in the Wild Card Round. The squad finished last in the Wild Card Series in the 2020 season, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. The following season, Milwaukee finished first in its division, and the team advanced to the National League Division Series in the playoffs, which it won. The team, however, was defeated by the eventual champion Atlanta Braves.
