Neil Robertson Biography and Career:
The first ranking title is a breakthrough. In the 2006–07 season, he made his debut. After finishing first in his group during the round-robin stage of the 2006 Grand Prix (he lost only one match, his opener against Nigel Bond by 2–3), Robertson defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan 5–1 in the quarter-finals. He advanced to the semi-finals, becoming only the fourth Australian to do so in a ranking event. He defeated Alan McManus 6–2 to advance to his first major final, where he faced another first-time finalist, unseeded Jamie Cope, whom he easily defeated 9–5 to win his first professional ranking tournament.
The victory netted Robertson £60,000, the most he’d ever earned in a single tournament. Robertson was eliminated early from both the UK Championship and the Masters, but he found his form again en route to the Welsh Open final. He defeated Stephen Hendry 5–3, making a break of 141 in the final frame, before recovering from a 4–3 deficit to defeat Ronnie O’Sullivan 5–4 in the quarter-finals.To win the title, he defeated Steve Davis 6–3 in the semi-finals and surprise finalist Andrew Higginson 9–8 in the final. He led 6–2 after the first session, then dropped six frames in a row to come within one frame of defeat, but won the match with the final three frames.
He advanced to the second round of the 2007 World Championship, where he was defeated 10–13 by Ronnie O’Sullivan despite winning six frames in a row at one point. Robertson had a poor start to the 2007–08 season, exiting early from three of the first four ranking events, as well as the 2008 Masters and the 2008 Malta Cup.
He did, however, advance to the quarter-finals of the 2007 Northern Ireland Trophy after victories over Jamie Cope and Ian McCulloch. He finished the season ranked tenth, but he was not among the top sixteen on the one-year list. 2008/2009 Following a slow start to the 2008–09 season, Robertson advanced to the final of the 2008 Bahrain Championship, where he faced Matthew Stevens. The match lasted nearly six hours in total, with the Australian coming out on top 9–7.
During the 2009 Masters, Robertson and his opponent, Stephen Maguire broke the record for the most consecutive century breaks with five. Robertson hit two centuries and Maguire hit three, with the latter’s third securing a 6–3 victory over the Australian. Robertson defeated Steve Davis, Ali Carter, and Stephen Maguire to reach the World Championship semi-finals for the first time, before losing to Shaun Murphy 14–17 (after coming back from 7–14 down to level at 14–14). 2009/2010 Robertson won the 2009 Grand Prix trophy in Glasgow in October 2009, defeating China’s Ding Junhui in the final 9–4.
He defeated defending champion John Higgins in the semi-finals on the final black of the deciding frame. During the event, he also scored his 100th career century. Robertson’s fourth title made him the most successful player from outside the UK and Ireland in ranking tournaments, though Ding Junhui tied him at the UK Championship that season. In his second-round match against Peter Ebdon in the 2010 China Open on April 1, 2010, Robertson made his first official maximum break of his career.
In the first round of the 2010 World Championship, Robertson defeated Fergal O’Brien 10–5. In his second-round match against Martin Gould, Robertson fell behind 0–6 and 5–11 before rallying to win 13–12. In the quarter-finals, he defeated Steve Davis 13–5. In the semi-finals, he defeated Ali Carter 17–12 to advance to the final. He defeated 2006 champion, Graeme Dott, 18 times, in 2013, 2015, and 2020. He has won at least one professional tournament every year since 2006, for a total of 22 ranking titles.
