Neneh Cherry Biography and Career:

Neneh Cherry created a mashup of genres that anticipated the rise of alternative rap and trip-hop. She has steadily contributed to a repertoire with equally unforeseen twists ever since. The United Kingdom was where this singer, songwriter, rapper, and producer first found success. Her varied solo debut, Raw Like Sushi (1989), reached the Top 10 charts in various countries and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Before her solo success, she was active in the post-punk movement.

Cherry has not followed the typical career trajectory of a commercial musician; instead, he releases an album on his own every few years and has contributed to projects including everyone from Peter Gabriel to Gorillaz. She released a trio of experimental albums in the 2010s (The Cherry Thing (2012), The Blank Project (2014), and Broken Politics 2018). Then she worked with a new generation of musicians to release a collection of cover songs (The Versions) of her previous work in the 2020s.

Neneh Mariann Karlsson, better known as Neneh Cherry, was born on March 10, 1964, in Stockholm, Sweden, to West African drummer Ahmadu Jah and Swedish artist Moki Cherry. Cherry dropped out of school at age 14 to pursue a career as a singer with the post-punk band the Cherries, which she joined in 1980 after moving to London with her mother and trumpeter stepfather Don Cherry.

She had previously been a part of the Slits and the Nails, but after leaving both bands, she joined the experimental funk/post-punk act Rip Rig + Panic, with whom she recorded the albums God (1981), I Am Cold (1982), & Attitude (1983). She also made several records with the New Age Steppers and the one-off band Raw Sex, Pure Energy.

Cherry stayed on with one of Rip Rig + Panic’s offshoots, Float Up CP, and led them through their hit “Kill Me in the Morning” after the original band disbanded (1985). The track “Slow Train to Dawn” from The is album Infected featured her the following year.

Cherry and fellow artist Cameron McVey (aka Booga Bear) met in 1987 while working as models for Buffalo fashion label founder Ray Petri. That year, signed to the Circa label, Cherry struck the U.K. with “Looking Good Diving with the Wild Bunch,” a B-side cover of Morgan/Stock McVey’s Aitken Waterman-produced “Looking Good Diving.”

Singles chart as a solo artist in December 1988 with “Buffalo Stance,” a rework of “Looking Good Diving with the Wild Bunch,” which peaked at #3 in the United Kingdom thanks to a collaboration with Bomb the Bass. The song also accurately predicted the album’s overall style, a diverse mix of pop intelligence and savvy hip-hop intensity. The United Kingdom’s number two.

The blockbuster album was released in June of 1989, with McVey serving as executive producer with Will Malone, Nellee Hooper, Mushroom, and 3D of Massive Attack. With the success of “Buffalo Stance,” two more songs were released: “Manchild” and “Kisses on the Wind,” and the artist was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist (won by Milli Vanilli).

Cherry released Homebrew in 1992, after contributing to the 1992 charity album Red Hot + Blue and the 1991 album Blue Lines by Massive Attack. This album is more mellow than the number 27 U.K. album Raw Like Sushi. McVey, Jonny Dollar, and Geoff Barrow (before his fame with Portishead) all had a hand in making the chart entry, including appearances by Gang Starr and Michael Stipe.

Cherry had a brief comeback in the charts in 1994 when she sang a duet with Youssou N’Dour on his worldwide smash “7 Seconds,” but she took a vacation to raise her children until 1996 she released Man, which peaked at number 16 in the United Kingdom.

Cherry spent most of the new millennium focusing on her family, including her daughters Naima, Tyson, and Mabel. Nonetheless, she did occasionally return to the music scene, such as when she worked with Live’s Edward Kowalczyk (“Walk Into This Room”), Peter Gabriel (OVO), and Gorillaz (“Kids with Gunz”) and recorded with her band circus.

In the 2010s, Cherry returned with some of her most experimental music. Her dad was a composer, and she led an experimental Scandinavian jazz trio called the Thing, who released their first album, The Cherry Thing, in 2012. The album included new compositions and inventive reinterpretations of songs originally performed by artists such as Ornette Coleman, the Stooges, Suicide, and Don Cherry.

The London duo RocketNumberNine, with whom she worked on her long-awaited fourth official studio album, Blank Project, released their album MeYouWeYou in 2013. Cherry, together with co-writers McVey and Paul Simm, released an album in 2014 that was produced by Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet). In 2018, another album, the reflective and unafraid Broken Politics, was released with Hebden at the helm of production.

Raw Like Sushi celebrated its 30th anniversary with a new and improved 2020 edition. In the same year, Cherry co-wrote and performed on the Avalanches’ “Wherever You Are,” The album’s title track was included on Dua Lipa’s Club Future Nostalgia: The Remix Album.
