Sam Fender Biography and Career:

Shirley and Alan Fender welcomed their son Samuel Thomas Fender, born on April 25th, 1994, in North Shields, England. His older brother’s name is Liam, and he is nine years his senior. The family belonged to the working class and resided in a terraced home in the North Shields district of North Shields. Shirley worked as a nurse, while Alan worked as an electrician. In addition to being a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and pianist, Alan plays the piano, while Liam is a drummer.

Both of them were musicians that performed in the area. Fender said that the first ten years of his childhood were “comfortable” for him since he was raised in a musical household. He has Irish ancestry via his great-great-grandmother. Later in life, his father pursued a career in music education. He went through a rough patch in his late youth and early teens. When he was eight years old, his mother left him behind, but years later, after being kicked out of the home he shared with his father by his stepmother, he went back to live with her.

As a result of the fact that his mother was residing in the Scottish Borders at the time, Fender spent most of his childhood in that region. Fender’s first guitar was a gift from his father when the young musician was just eight years old. At ten, he was already “proficient” on the guitar, having been inspired by musicians such as Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and Slash. Fender received his high school education at John Spence Community School.

As a youngster, he was teased and picked on because he was overweight and not sporty. His early years were profoundly impacted when he and his mother came upon the corpse of a lady they knew who had committed suicide. This event occurred while he was a young teenager. Fender says, “All of a sudden, mortality became real. Both life and death took on a more tangible quality.”At 12, Fender made the acquaintance of his future buddy Dean Thompson, with whom he continued to play the guitar.

Over the following year, he had his first performance in front of an audience at his brother’s street performer evenings, where he covered the music of Jimi Hendrix. He also played, backed by Thompson, at the birthday party of the latter’s uncle, where he covered the theme of Kings of Leon. At this stage in his life, his objective was to pursue a career as a musician; Fender remembered that “when I hit 13, it was the only thing I wanted from life.”

Fender started creating his tunes when he was 14. The following year, he taught himself to sing by listening to Grace by Jeff Buckley, a CD his brother gave him. The albums Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen were played to him for the first time when he was 15 years old by his brother. At 15, Fender established his first band and started performing at open mic evenings hosted by his older brother.

Because they were both low-income then, he and his mother were forced to make do with a meager living space in a run-down apartment on a council estate on the outskirts of North Shields. The apartment was tiny and in disrepair. Fender was a student at Whitley Bay High School till the sixth form. In high school, he had several classmates who shared his interest in music. Through their shared passion for music, he became acquainted with Joe Atkinson, and they began a relationship.

Fender attended Whitley Bay High School, majoring in theater and earning an A in English language and literature. However, he started to spend most of his time in the music department, even though he had yet to study the subject academically. He participated in extracurricular activities at the school, contributing to his great popularity among students and faculty. Fender gave a concert with his band for the kids completing their term in year 13.

Bouts of fighting punctuated his troubled childhood, and despite having broad shoulders, he was often hit. Alan would train him in boxing to improve this situation; however, the desired outcome would not often materialize. Fender won a competition held by the Teenage Cancer Trust when he was just sixteen years old. Matty Healy served as a judge for the competition. He was raised in a time and place when North Shields was “ravaged” by the ever-present use of illegal substances, mainly spice, often referred to as the “zombie drug.”

Friends of Fender’s were involved in the distribution of marijuana; eventually, some progressed to distributing more complex substances like cocaine. He had smoked spice a handful of times before, but he quit after finding the experience disturbing and giving in to the pressure from his peers to do so. However, many of his pals developed an addiction and struggled for years; Fender said that “it ruined their lives.”

When he was 17, his mother had to give up her work as a nurse after 40 years due to fibromyalgia. He considered selling drugs to support her, but she convinced him not to. Fender admired his father for his skill as a musician and saw him as a problematic guy who battled to provide for his children in a community that suffered from a pervasive lack of opportunity. Fender named his company after his father.

Fender recounted that his stepfather had been homeless for almost a year after serving in the military services and had struggled to find permanent housing and a job while trying to escape the street life. Fender’s stepfather had become homeless after serving in the armed forces.
