Zac Brown Band Biography and Career:

The company is located in Atlanta, Georgia. Zac Brown Band is an Atlanta-based country music group. In addition to Zac Brown on lead vocals and guitar, Jimmy De Martin (fiddle), John Driskell Hopkins (bass and baritone/upright bass, ukulele, banjo), Coy Bowles (keyboards), Chris Fryar (drums), Clay Cook (mandolin/steel guitar), Matt Mangano (bass), and Daniel de Los Reyes (bass guitar) make up the rest of the group.

The band has released four albums since its start in 1979: two live albums, a greatest-hits collection, and two extended plays. It has a total of sixteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs or Country Airplay list, thirteen of which have topped the charts. They have both been awarded platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Among the artists they’ve collaborated with are Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffett, Kid Rock, Jason Mraz, Dave Grohl, Chris Cornell, Brandi Carlile, and Avicii.

Brown was on the road a lot in 2002, playing about 200 performances a year. The Zac Brown Band began with Brown on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, accompanied by Marcus Petruska on drums and bass and Jacob Lawson on bass. Brown renamed his record label “Southern Ground” after starting Home Grown in 2003. A music venue/restaurant called “Zac’s Place” was opened by Brown and his father back in 2004 at Lake Oconee, Georgia, where they serve southern-style cuisine.

When a developer bought the restaurant, the Zac Brown Band bought a tour bus and went on the road full-time, performing at rock and country clubs as well as folk and jam band festivals. The Zac Brown Band’s first self-released album was Home Grown. Fiddler and tenor singer Jimmy De Martini joined the band in 2004. Wyatt Durrette, Brown’s longtime songwriting partner, worked as a bartender at Sidelines Sports Bar in Kennesaw, where the Zac Brown Band frequently performed, according to De Martini in an interview.

Durette recommended De Martini to Brown when he needed a “lead instrument” for his band. After multiple shows at the club, Brown approached De Martini about becoming a permanent member of the band, and De Martini readily consented.  In 1998, Brown and John Driskell Hopkins met at an open mic night organized by John Driskell Hopkins at CJ’s Landing in Buckhead, Georgia. The album was recorded at Brighter Shade Studios, where Hopkins later released Home Grown.

During the recording of the band’s first number-one single, “Toes,” Hopkins stepped in to play bass guitar. The second song, “Toes,” from the band’s major-label debut, The Foundation, was recorded in part in Hopkins’ studio. Brighter Shade Studios also recorded a little section of You Get What You Pay. As of right now, it is Coy Bowles who is enrolled in the Georgia State University School of Music in Atlanta, Georgia (GSU).

Coy Bowles and the Fellowship was formed in 2004 after he became active in a variety of Atlanta music scenes. Bowles reconnected with Brown two years after first meeting him. In Atlanta one night, the Zac Brown Band was scheduled to perform, and he learned about it from a mutual friend. It all started with an afternoon spent getting to know each other before the show, which led to Brown inviting Bowles to join his band for the show that night.

As a thank you for coming to their gig, Bowles invited the band to sit in with him and the Fellowship a few months later. Eight months into this, it became too much for Bowles to handle, so he decided to put the Fellowship on indefinite suspension and join Zac Brown’s band full-time.

Live Nation Artists Records and Brown’s own Home Grown label signed the Zac Brown Band after Chris Fryar joined the band in 2008. To this day, Fryar remains a fixture in the Birmingham music scene after studying at North Texas University and Mississippi University for Women.

When Brown was looking for a new drummer, a friend of Fryar’s referred him to Brown, who was looking for a new drummer. It was just a matter of time until Fryar was accepted into the Zac Brown Band, having just finished a stint with another band. His musical palette has expanded since Matt Mangano joined Hopkins’ band in 2014 to incorporate instruments other than six and seven-string guitars, such as baritone and ukulele, and double bass.
