Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Biography and Career:
They are one of four teams that make up the Mavericks Independent Baseball League, which is based entirely in the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area, and they play all of their home games at Volcanoes Stadium. The Volcanoes were founded in Keizer, Oregon, and they are one of the founding members of the Mavericks Independent Baseball League. They were the Class A Short Season affiliate of the San Francisco Giants from 1997 to 2020, and they competed in Minor League Baseball’s Northwest League throughout that time. Despite promising to continue to play in 2021, the Volcanoes were not given a player development license by any Major League Baseball club after the 2020 season was completed.
The Volcanoes fulfilled their pledge by launching the Mavericks League after the 2020 season. The Volcanoes’ history begins in Bellingham, Washington, where the team competed as an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners for eighteen seasons until moving to Spokane, Washington. The Bellingham Giants are the result of a parent-child transfer between Bellingham and Everett, as well as the adoption of their parent club’s name. Keizer city officials, led by Mayor Dennis Koho, and civic leaders worked together to find a location for and construct a new baseball stadium in the city.
Since the Salem Dodgers were forced to abandon historic Waters Field in the early 1960s, the area had been without a suitable professional baseball stadium (which burned down in 1966). In a contest, residents of the area adopted the nickname “Volcanoes.” Despite its geographical position, the new club was recognized as a “Salem-Keizer” squad in order to combine both the history and the grandeur of the larger city and the state capital into its name. It was agreed that the Volcanoes would continue their player development deal with the San Francisco Giants until the end of the 2020 season. In their first season, the Volcanoes went 40–36 and placed third in the South Division standings, which was their best finish to date.
Salem-Keizer had a fantastic season in 1998, winning the league championship. The Volcanoes concluded the season with a record of 43–33, which tied them with the Southern Oregon Timberjacks for second place. During a one-game playoff, the Volcanoes defeated the Timberjacks to claim the South Division championship. Salem-Keizer won the Northwest League championship by defeating the Boise Hawks in a best-of-three series in the finals. The Volcanoes were named the winner of the Freitas Award, which recognizes the greatest short-season Class A baseball franchise. The Volcanoes celebrated their tenth season in Salem-Keizer by finishing the regular season with a league-best 55 victories, which was also a league-best for the team at the time. In the seventh inning of a 19–3 blowout of the Canadians on August 30, the squad set franchise marks for the most consecutive games won (12) and the most runs in an inning (10).
Adam Witter, the team’s catcher, recorded the team’s first-ever cycle during that game. The Volcanoes finished the 2006 season with a three-game victory over the Boise Hawks, claiming the league championship. Selling-Keizer shattered their own record most victories in a season, finishing with a 57–19 record and an overall record of 0.749, which was good for first place in baseball that year. They defeated the Tri-City Dust Devils, three games to one, to win their second consecutive championship in as many years.
In the 2007 Minor League Baseball Awards, the squad was recognized as the Best Short-Season Team as well as the Best Overall Team. The Volcanoes finished the season with their third straight West Division championship. However, despite their best efforts, the team fell short of a third consecutive Northwest League championship and lost the championship series to the Spokane Indians. Salem-Keizer finished with a 49–27 record to capture the division title for the fifth consecutive year. The Volcanoes defeated the Tri-City Dust Devils in four games to win the league championship behind a pitching staff that had a 0.69 earned run average throughout the course of the series.
When it comes to the Volcanoes, they have made an unprecedented six postseason appearances and have won four Northwest League championships in the first decade of the new millennium. Last season, the Volcanoes won the south division title but were defeated by the Boise Hawks in the division series. The Salem-Keizer Raiders made their first appearance in the postseason in five years in 2019 by winning the first half of the south division. The Volcanoes were defeated in the division series by the Hillsboro Hops, who went on to win the league championship.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minor League Baseball season in 2020 has been canceled. On January 26, 2021, the franchise announced the development of the Mavericks League, a new professional independent league that would compete in the NBA.
