Alexandra Burke Biography and Career:

Alexandra Imelda Cecelia Ewen Burke is a British singer, composer, and actor. She was born on August 25, 1988, in the United Kingdom. She was crowned the champion of the fifth season of the British television show The X Factor in 2008, and since then, she has secured recording contracts with Epic Records, RCA Records, and Syco Music. After Burke was crowned the winner of The X Factor, the winner’s song, “Hallelujah,” was released.

Which became the record holder for the most singles sold over 24 hours in Europe, selling 105,000 in one day, and became the top-selling single in the UK in 2008, as well as the number one song in the UK for Christmas 2008. A first for a British female solo artist, the song had sold more than one million copies in the UK alone by the time January 2009 rolled around.

Overcome was Burke’s first studio album, which she released in 2009. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and spawned four number-one singles on the UK Singles Chart and the Irish Singles Chart. These singles were “Hallelujah,” “Bad Boys,” “All Night Long,” and “Start Without You,” respectively. Overcome went on to become one of the most successful albums released in the UK in that particular year.

Her three BRIT Award nominations came as a result of the singles that were taken from the album. “Broken Heels” and “The Silence” were singles taken from the album and reached the top 10 in the UK. Burke’s return single, “Elephant,” was published in February 2012, while “Let It Go” served as the second single. Burke’s second album, Heartbreak on Hold, was released in June 2012, after the release of the two singles.

Burke succeeded Beverley Knight in the leading role of Rachel Marron in the West End musical The Bodyguard in June 2014, performing at the Adelphi Theatre. Burke continued to tour with the play in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. In 2016, Burke began a yearlong residency in Sister Act The Musical, where she plays the central role of Deloris Van Cartier and is the show’s director.

She was a contestant on the BBC program “Strictly Come Dancing” in 2017. In the same year, Burke entered into a recording contract with the Decca Records division of Universal Music Group. In March 2018, she released her third studio album, The Truth Is. Cecelia and Ewen are the middle names that Burke, along with her mother and sister Sheneice, were given at birth.

Burke said she had to mature quickly and early since her mother was always traveling with her band. She was responsible for looking after her younger brother, which included transporting him to and from school. She added that this forced her to become an adult very young. Even though they were no longer together, Burke’s parents continued to share parental responsibilities for the rest of their children after their divorce in 1992.

In 2005, Burke participated in an audition for the second season of The X Factor, which ultimately went to Shayne Ward and was won by him. She reached the final seven in Louis Walsh’s 16–24 category, the top 21 in the competition. However, Louis Walsh did not pick her for his last four because he considered her too young to compete at that level.

Despite this, Burke did not give up but continued pursuing professional singing classes for three years. 2008 was the year when Burke made his second attempt to win The X Factor. Because she competed in the “Girls” category, she was coached by Cheryl from Girls Aloud, who ultimately chose her to compete in the finals. The finals consisted of ten weekly live programs in which candidates were eliminated individually based on the audience’s votes.

On the first live event, Burke sang a rendition of the timeless ballad “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston. She performed a version of “I’ll Be There” by The Jackson 5 during the second live event she did. During the third big band week, Burke performed “Candyman” by Christina Aguilera and got her first standing ovation. Burke performed “On the Radio” by Donna Summer at the fourth live concert with a disco theme.

Mariah Carey gave individual masterclasses to Burke and the other finalists on November 8 as part of Mariah Carey Week. During one of these workshops, Carey praised Burke for the quality of her voice. After performing “Without You,” Burke was rewarded with a standing ovation from the judges, who all gave her constructive criticism.

During weeks 6 and 7, the judges praised Burke for her performances of “You are so Beautiful” and Dan Hartman’s “Relight My Fire.” The song “Relight My Fire” became successful in the UK mainly due to Take That’s 1993 revival.

She replaced Diana Vickers as the bookmakers’ favorite following her performance in the quarter-final, during which she sang “Toxic” by Britney Spears and “Listen” by Beyoncé, for which she earned another standing ovation. During the semi-final, Burke performed the song “Don’t Stop the Music” by Rihanna and the standing “Un-Break My Heart” by Toni Braxton.

Eoghan Quigg, a youngster from Northern Ireland, and JLS, a boyband, also competed in the grand final with Burke. It was needed that the three finalists sang three songs: one had to be a Christmas song, another had to be a duet with a well-known musician, and the third had to be the song that was their personal favorite from the series. This year, her rendition of “Silent Night” served as her Christmas song.
