Laura Marling Biography and Career:

Laura Beatrice Marling is a folk singer-songwriter from the United Kingdom. She was born on February 1, 1990. She was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist in 2011 and 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 at the Brit Awards. 2011 she was awarded the Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist. Marling moved to London at 16 to pursue a career in music with the help of her elder sisters.

She was a member of several bands before releasing her first album, Alas, I Cannot Swim, in 2008. The Mercury Music Prize committee considered her first album, her second album titled “I Speak Because I Can,” her fourth album titled “Once I Was an Eagle,” and her seventh album titled “Song for Our Daughter” for the award in 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2020, respectively.

Her sixth album, Semper Femina, and Song for Our Daughter were both considered for a Grammy Award nomination in Best Folk Album. Her music is often about sexuality, relationships, and the contemporary idea of gender and traumatic experiences. Marling moved to the suburbs of London when she finished her GCSE examinations at 16 when she joined her elder sisters there.

The British press used “nu-folk” to describe the musical trend developed by interconnected bands attracted to acoustic instruments and tunes with traditional overtones. She quickly became a member of one of these bands. Marling is credited as a backing singer on the indie folk band Noah and the Whale’s first album, Peaceful; the World Lays Me Down. Marling is a founding member of Noah and the Whale and was a member of the band’s initial lineup.

She parted ways with the band before the 2008 publication of the album because of a breakdown in her relationship with Charlie Fink, who was the main vocalist for the band. Marling is billed as ‘Laura Marlin for her appearance on The Rakes’ tune titled “Suspicious Eyes,” included in the band’s “Ten New Messages” album in 2007. Later in her career, Marling worked with the band Mystery Jets and provided guest vocals for the track “Young Love,” which they released in 2008.

At an earlier stage in her career, Marling collaborated on stage with Ted Dwane, Marcus Mumford, and Winston Marshall, all of whom were members of the band Mumford & Sons. After seeing Marling perform at her second solo show, Jamie T invited her to tour with him. She has gone on tour with various artists, including Adam Green from the alternative folk band The Moldy Peaches.

Before the release of her first extended play (EP) titled “London Town” on WayOutWest Records, she had performances at the O2 Wireless Festival in 2007 and at the inaugural Underage Festival in August 2007 at Victoria Park in East London. Marling has been on two television shows, including The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Later With Jools Holland. She has performed “Ghosts” and “New Romantic” on these shows.

She appeared on the Radio 2 program hosted by Russell Brand in 2008 with her sister. After being turned away from one of her concerts because she was too young to enter, she once decided to perform on the street instead. I Speak Because I Can, the follow-up album to Alas, I Cannot Swim, was released on March 22, 2010, exactly one year after the first album. The album features a more mature sound, and its lyrics deal with “responsibility, particularly the responsibility of womanhood.” Ethan Johns produced the album; its sound and lyrics reflect this maturity.

The songs “Goodbye England (Covered in Snow)” and “Devil’s Spoke” were both published on iTunes in December 2009 and March 15, 2010, respectively and came out before the album. I Speak Because I Can debuted at position number four on the UK Albums Chart on March 28, 2010, when it was released. It was considered for a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize in 2010. The music publication NME ranked 263 on their list of the 500 best albums they compiled in 2013.

As a solo artist, Marling wrapped up the ‘Working Holiday Tour’ of the United States in October 2012. She announced then that the fourth album, which would subsequently be titled Once I Was an Eagle, was ready and would be released in February 2013; however, the release date was ultimately pushed back to May 2013. On March 8, 2013, Marling announced that the album would be published on May 27, 2013, and released in the United States a day later, on May 28.

After the album was released, Marling said that throughout the process of composing for the album, she exclusively listened to “music made between 1969 and 1972.” She defined this period as one in which “guitar was becoming a masculine extension.” During the period after the album’s release when it was being promoted, Marling said that she wanted to take a more straightforward approach with the fourth album and that, in contrast to the previous two albums, she recorded all of the tracks alone.

Marling revealed the title of her fifth studio album, which will be named Short Movie, on the 16th of December, 2014. The album’s title track served as the first single and was made available for digital download on the same day it was made accessible to the public. The album was first published in the United Kingdom on March 23, 2015, and in the United States on March 24, 2015. It contains thirteen songs that Marling wrote and composed.
