Ang Lee Biography and Career:

Taiwanese director Ang Lee OBS was born on October 23, 1954. He is a member of the OBS. Lee had his education in Taiwan and then in the United States after he was born in Pingtung County, located in southern Taiwan. It is well known that Lee’s work as a filmmaker is characterized by its emotional intensity and investigation of suppressed and concealed feelings. Throughout his career, he has been honored with several distinctions, including two Academy Awards and widespread critical and popular recognition on a global scale.

In addition to three Golden Globe Awards, there were four BAFTA Awards. Lee received the 27th spot on The Guardian’s list of the 40 finest filmmakers in 2003. The three films that Lee directed in his home country, Pushing Hands (1991), The Wedding Banquet (1993), and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), which explored the relationships and conflicts between tradition and modernity, Eastern and Western, are collectively referred to as the “Father Knows Best” trilogy. Lee rose to prominence as a director of films in his home country.

His films received positive reviews from critics in Taiwan, where he was born, and from critics worldwide. The critically acclaimed costume drama Sense and Sensibility (1995), the first picture in which he used the English language exclusively, was the film that launched his career in Hollywood. Subsequently, he was honored with the Academy Award for Best Director twice: the love film Brokeback Mountain (2005) and the survival drama Life of Pi (2012).

The drama The Ice Storm (1997), the martial arts drama Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), the superhero blockbuster Hulk (2003), and the sexual espionage thriller Lust, Caution (2007) are only a few of the films that he directed. He has required pictures in a wide variety of genres. An Ang Lee was born into a Waishengren family in a military dependents’ village of the Republic of China Armed Forces. This village is in Chaochou, Pingtung, a southern agricultural county in Taiwan.

Immediately after the conclusion of the Chinese civil war in 1949, both of Lee’s parents relocated to Taiwan from De’an, located in Jiangxi province in Mainland China. In his upbringing, he was raised in a family that significantly focused on education. Lee attended the Provincial Tainan First Senior High School, now known as the National Tainan First Senior High School. His father served as the principal of the school until Lee’s graduation. He anticipated that he would succeed in the yearly Joint College/University Entrance Examination, which is the only means by which one might get a university education in the Republic of China in the Republic of China.

However, after failing the examination twice, much to his father’s dismay, he enrolled in a three-year college called the National Arts School, which is now reformed and extended into the National Taiwan University of Arts. He graduated from this institution in 1975. His father had hoped that he would get a teaching job, but when he was in college, he developed an interest in the performing arts and the arts in general. This early dissatisfaction was the impetus for him to pursue a career in performance art.

One of the most influential experiences of his life was seeing the film The Virgin Spring (1960), directed by Ingmar Bergman. Following completing his obligatory military duty in the Republic of China Navy (ROCN), Lee emigrated to the United States in 1979 to pursue his education at the University of Illinois in Urbana–Champaign. He finally earned his bachelor’s degree in drama in 1980.

Lee’s difficulties with speaking English made it impossible for him to pursue a career in acting; thus, he rapidly shifted his focus to directing instead. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Lee met the woman who would become his future wife, Jane Lin, a student from Taiwan working on her doctoral degree. Following this, he obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree in film production from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where he had previously attended.

He was a fellow student of Spike Lee and was a member of the team that worked on the film that served as his thesis project, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads. As a graduate student, Lee completed a 16mm short film titled Shades of the Lake (1982). This film was awarded the Best Drama Award in Taiwan Films and Drama. In addi in Taiwantion to being selected for transmission by the Public Broadcasting Service, his thesis work, a play that lasted for 43 minutes and was titled Fine Line (1984), was awarded the Wasserman Award for Outstanding Direction from New York University.

The William Morris Agency, a well-known talent and literary agency, took notice of Lee’s thesis at New York University. This agency would go on to represent Lee in the future. In the beginning, however, WMA provided Lee with few possibilities and remained jobless for six years. During this period, he was a housewife who worked full-time, while his wife, Jane Lin, a molecular scientist, was the primary provider for their family of four. With Lin’s support and understanding, the couple overcame the considerable burden this arrangement imposed on them.
