Ridley Scott Biography and Career:

On November 30, 1937, in County Durham, England, UK, Ridley Scott was born. His father was a British soldier. His father was missing from his life because he was born just before WWII. So his mother raised him and his two brothers. He had two brothers, older and younger. His older brother left home to join the ‘British Merchant Navy’ when Ridley was only a toddler. So Ridley grew up alone. Ridley was also concerned about his father’s health. Ridley began reading science-fiction short stories while attending ‘Grangefield Grammar School.’

Jane’ flopped. Ridley’s charm seemed to be fading, and he needed to do something remarkable to save his career. Following in the footsteps of his younger brother, Tony Scott, Ridley focused on producing the television series ‘The Hunger.’ Ridley also produced ‘Clay Pigeons’ before taking another stab at directing.

In 2000, Ridley directed the Roman epic ‘Gladiator,’ starring Russell Crowe. Apart from making Russell Crowe an international sensation, the picture also salvaged Ridley’s career, winning five ‘Academy Awards,’ including ‘Best Picture.’ In 2001, Ridley directed the sequel to 1991’s ‘Silence of the Lambs,’ titled ‘Hannibal.’ Despite a huge box office debut, the picture earned mixed reviews from critics. ‘Black Hawk Down’ earned Ridley another ‘Academy Award’ nomination. Then came the low-budget hit ‘Matchstick Men.’

His 2005 film ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ sparked heated debate. The film was a moderate box office success, but Ridley blamed the studio executives who requested him to eliminate 45 minutes from the picture. The director’s cut of the film was released in 2006 and received rave reviews. It is currently one of the director’s best efforts. The 2007 film ‘American Gangster’ was based on the life of popular drug lord Frank Lucas. Ridley was nominated for ‘Best Director at the ‘Golden Globes.’ His following two films, ‘Body of Lies’ and ‘Robin Hood,’ were modest hits.

In 2009, sources claimed Ridley was creating a ‘Prometheus’ prequel to ‘Alien.’ The film, starring Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron, came out in 2012. Famous author Cormac McCarthy wanted Ridley to direct a film based on his screenplay. The Counselor opened to critical and economic acclaim. ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ starred Christian Bale. In 2015, Ridley directed ‘The Martian,’ starring Matt Damon as a man stuck on Mars.

The film received positive reviews and went on to become Ridley’s biggest grossing film. ‘Alien: Covenant came out in May 2017. It was a Prometheus sequel. Critics praised the film as a “return to form.” The film was recognized as one of the year’s biggest blockbusters. Then he executive produced ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ the sequel to his 1982 cult masterpiece. The film was released in October 2017 and has been hailed as a modern classic.
