Bartlett Sher Biography and Career:

Theater director Bartlett B. Sher was born in the United States on March 27, 1959. He has been called “one of the most inventive and intriguing directors, not only in the American theater but also in the international opera world,” according to The New York Times.

Sher has received nine Tony Award nominations, and his directing of the 2008 Broadway revival of South Pacific earned him both a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical and a Drama Desk Award. Sher, the son of Aird (Stewart) and Joseph Sher, was born in San Francisco, California, in the United States.

He had a twin brother named Bradley as well as six more siblings. He was brought up Catholic (during his teenage years, he found out that his Lithuanian-born father was Jewish). Sher went at Worcester, Massachusetts’ St. Ignatius College Preparatory and afterwards the College of the Holy Cross.


He went back to St. Ignatius to lead the theater department and teach English. During the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984, he was affected by the artistic events that were held in conjunction with the Games, especially by the films of Polish director Tadeusz Kantor.

Sher worked with Robert Woodruff and Garland Wright, both of whom served as mentors, as company director at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and as assistant creative director at Hartford Stage in Hartford, Connecticut.

Sher has conducted, instructed, and organized workshops both domestically and abroad. He served as artistic director of Seattle’s Intiman Theatre until being appointed resident director at New York City’s Lincoln Center Theater in 2008.

Sher directed productions of Waste by Harley Granville Barker in 2000 (the play’s American premiere, which won the 2000 Obie Award for Best Play), Cymbeline by Shakespeare in 2002, Dom Juan by Molière in 2003, and Pericles, Prince of Tyre by Shakespeare in 2004 at the Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA) in New York.

At the Brooklyn Academy of Music, he served as the director of Pericles, Dom Juan, and Cymbeline. Sher oversaw the Metropolitan Opera’s performance of Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” in 2006 at Lincoln Center. Sher oversaw the opera Tales of Hoffmann at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 2009. (opening December 3, 2009).

Sher oversaw the Seattle Opera production of Mourning Becomes Electra in 2011. Le Comte Ory by Rossini, staged by Sher, debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in March 2011. The New York Times critic praised the show for being “lively, bright, and innovative.”

The English National Opera hosted the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s Two Boys in June 2011 thanks to Sher’s production. In October 2013, the Metropolitan Opera in New York had the American debut. The production was ordered by The Met.

Sher made his Broadway debut in 2005 when his Intiman Playhouse-born play The Light in the Piazza had its world premiere at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. Sher was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for the 2008 Broadway revival of South Pacific, as well as for The Light in the Piazza and a 2006 revival of Awake and Sing!.

He was nominated for a second Tony in 2009 for the Come and Gone revival. Based on Pedro Almodóvar’s 1988 film, Sher directed a musical version of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown in 2010. A staging of the show from the Lincoln Center Theater premiered on Broadway on November 4, 2010.

Ben Brantley of The New York Times lambasted the musical as being disorganized, gimmicky, and overdesigned. Funny Girl, a previously announced revival that Sher was slated to direct and was scheduled to launch on Broadway in February 2012, was ultimately postponed.

The New York Times gave Clifford Odets’ Golden Boy, which was directed by Sher, a favorable review when it premiered there in December 2012. The Belasco Theatre, where Golden Boy was first performed on Broadway 75 years ago, hosted this production.

Eight Tony Award nominations were given to the production, with Sher’s fifth nomination for directing among them. In 2006, Sher had directed Odets’ Awake and Sing! 53 performances were given throughout the production’s run from December 2012 to January 2013.

Sher oversaw the musical adaptation of The Bridges of Madison County in 2014. Between February and May 2014, there were 100 performances of the play. The Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center hosted the April 16, 2015, opening of the Broadway production of The King and I, which was directed by Sher and starred Kelli O’Hara as Anna Leonowens, Ken Watanabe as The King of Siam, and Ruthie Anne Miles as Lady Tiang.

The production won Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (O’Hara), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Miles), and Best Costume Design of a Musical. He was nominated for a 2015 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical (Catherine Zuber).

Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Sher, debuted at the Broadway Theatre on December 17, 2015, and ran through December 31, 2016, with Danny Burstein as Tevye and Jessica Hecht playing Golde. The world premiere of Oslo, by J.T. Roger, was directed by Sher and premiered in July 2016 at the Mitzi Newhouse Theater.

In April 2017, the performance was moved to the Vivian Beaumont Theater for a public run. The 2021 television film adaption of Oslo was directed by Sher. For Oslo, the 2018 revival of My Fair Lady, and the 2018 play adaption of To Kill a Mockingbird, Sher garnered Tony Award nominations.

Sher, his wife Kristin Flanders, an actress with a Yale education, and their two daughters reside in Manhattan. He characterized his father, an insurance broker, as a “great businessman, extremely charismatic,” but he was also a serial philanderer who had a second family with a different lady.

A protracted divorce left its imprint on Sher’s early years. A Chinese-American guy named Doug Chung moved in, helped raise the family, and gave much-needed stability once his mother soon met him. Sher’s direction of South Pacific was influenced by his experiences with mixed-race blended families.
