Bill Ranford Biography and Career:

William Edward Ranford is a Canadian native born on December 14, 1966. He is a former goalkeeper in the ice hockey professional ranks and now works as the director of goaltending for the Los Angeles Kings. He was chosen by the Boston Bruins in the third round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, moving him up to the 52nd overall position. Ranford was a member of the Boston Bruins for the whole of his NHL career, which spanned fifteen seasons.

While playing for Canada, the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Detroit Red Wings won two Stanley Cups, one Canada Cup, and the 1994 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships. He is the first goalkeeper in men’s ice hockey history to get the Most Valuable Player award at the Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship, the Canada Cup/World Cup, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Ranford spent his childhood in New Westminster, British Columbia, despite being born in Brandon, Manitoba. In 1985, he received his secondary school diploma from New Westminster Secondary School. When he was younger, he participated in figure skating training but ultimately settled on a career as a goaltender. Ranford spent some of his childhood in several cities and towns throughout Canada and Germany due to his father’s service in the Canadian Armed Forces.

He was a member of the Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and Red Deer, Alberta, local teams. Before being selected by the Boston Bruins in the third round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft (52nd overall), Ranford spent his entire junior career playing for the New Westminster Bruins. He was with the club for two seasons before getting picked.

The year after Ranford was drafted, 1985–1986, was memorable for him. He was chosen to the Second All-Star Team in the Western Hockey League and played in his first NHL game after the WHL season. Boston won three of the four games he played in, but they lost both of their playoff games. At the beginning of the next season, Boston sent him to the Moncton Golden Flames of the American Hockey League (AHL). There, he started the season with a record of three wins and zero losses and ended up spending the remainder of the season with Boston.

Ranford was finally moved to the Edmonton Oilers on March 8, 1988, from the Boston Bruins with Geoff Courtnall in exchange for Andy Moog. This resulted from the switch of Bruins coach Butch Goring with Terry O’Reilly, which led to Ranford falling out of favor and eventually being traded. Before being sold, he had spent most of the 1987–88 season playing for the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League (AHL), but that appearance was his last in the minor leagues.

In 1988, while serving as Grant Fuhr’s backup, Ranford won the Stanley Cup for the first time. Ranford established himself as a first-rate goalkeeper in 1990, despite being constantly compared to Fuhr, who was injured. He led the Oilers to the Stanley Cup and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the most valuable player in the playoffs. It was the last Stanley Cup victory for the Edmonton Oilers dynasty, which began in 1917.

After playing for Edmonton for the following six seasons, Ranford was traded to the Boston Bruins on January 11, 1996, in exchange for Mariusz Czerkawski, Sean Brown, and a first-round selection in the 1996 Entry Draft (Matthieu Descoteaux). Ranford went on to play for the Bruins for another season. In exchange for Jason Allison and Anson Carter, Ranford was traded to the Washington Capitals on March 1, 1997, with Adam Oates and Rick Tocchet. This move came after less than two seasons with the Boston Bruins.

Jim Carey was selected in the conditional selection for the 1998 Entry selection, while Lee Goren was chosen in the third round in the 1997 Entry Draft. Ranford was Washington’s starting goalkeeper until he suffered an injury in the first game of the 1997–1998 season. As a result of his injury, Ranford was out for a large chunk of the season. Olaf Kolzig had already been moved into the starting position when he returned.

It was Ranford’s third trip to the Finals, even though Kolzig played every minute of the playoffs for the Capitals, and that year, the Capitals progressed to the Stanley Cup Finals. In a trade on June 18, 1998, he was sent to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a selection in the second round of the 1999 Entry Draft and a pick in the third round of the 1998 Entry Draft (Todd Hornung).

He started the season with Tampa Bay, but on March 23, 1999, he was sent to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a draft selection that was contingent on certain conditions. It was the second agreement that day between the two groups. The previous deal sent goalkeeper Wendel Clark to the Red Wings along with a draft selection, while it sent goaltender Kevin Hodson to the Lightning along with a draft pick.

The acquisition of Ranford could only take place as a result of the exchange involving Wendel Clark. That spring, Ranford participated in his last postseason games, making four appearances in the second round of the playoffs when the starter, Chris Osgood, was injured. Ranford finished with a record of 2–2 and a shutout in the postseason for the fourth time in his career. In the 1999–2000 season, Ranford played in the National Hockey League for the last time. He returned to Edmonton as a free agent and served as Tommy Salo’s backup before retiring on April 24.
