Andrew Cassels Biography and Career:

Andrew William Cassels is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey center born on July 23, 1969. He played in the National Hockey League for sixteen seasons, splitting time between the Montreal Canadiens, Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Washington Capitals. Cassels’s full name is Andrew William Cassels. He formerly worked as an assistant coach with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Cassels was born and raised in Bramalea, which is located in Ontario, and it was there that he participated in his youth hockey.

His son, Cole, was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Entry Draft in 2013 with the 85th overall pick. As a young boy, he represented a minor ice hockey team from Chinguacousy in Brampton, Ontario, in the 1982 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. The tournament was held in Quebec.
In the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, the Montreal Canadiens picked Andrew Cassels in the 17th overall position. He had three outstanding seasons playing with the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League, with his most memorable season coming in 1987–88.

He earned the Most Valuable Player title for the league when he led the Ontario Hockey League in assists and points throughout the regular season and the playoffs. Cassels scored the first professional career goal on his first shift and first shot when he debuted with Montreal in the National Hockey League on November 19, 1989. In his first two seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, he finished in second place in scoring while also leading the club in assists. Despite this, he could not direct his side to victory, and the number of postseason appearances he failed to make increased to nine.

Cassels would play some of the finest hockey of his career in the 2001–02 season, earning 50 points in 53 games and helping the Canucks reach the playoffs for the first time since 1992. This was the Canucks’ second participation in the playoffs since 1996 and his first since 1992. Cassels departed Vancouver in 2002 to sign a free agency deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he was reunited with his buddy and old linemate Geoff Sanderson. This coincided with the expiry of his contract in 2002 and the emergence of younger centermen Brendan Morrison and Henrik Sedin.

Both players had their best years since their time spent in Hartford. Therefore their synergy had not diminished in the five years since they had last played together in Hartford. Since Cassels’s career year in 1993, when he had 68 points and 48 assists, those numbers represent his career highs. However, injuries would take their toll on him during the 2003–04 NHL season as he fell to only six goals and 26 points, his lowest totals since his rookie year in Montreal. This was because he had suffered a significant number of ailments.

After the lockout during the 2004–2005 NHL season, Cassels signed a contract with the Washington Capitals on August 12, 2005. However, the year-long hiatus, in addition to the effects of age and injuries, had a significant negative impact on his performance. Cassels was let go by the Capitals on January 28, 2006, having appeared in just 31 games for them and contributing only 12 points to their cause.
Cassels played in 1015 games throughout his 16 NHL seasons, scoring 204 goals, 528 assists, and 732 points overall, in addition to 410 minutes in the penalty box.
