Mike Gartner Biography and Career:

Michael Alfred Gartner is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey right winger born on October 29, 1959. He played 19 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Phoenix Coyotes, among other teams. Gartner holds the record for the most games played by a right winger in a single season with a single unit. In addition to that, he was a member of the Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association (WHA) for one season. He led Team Canada to two victories in the Canada Cup competition.

Gartner was recognized as one of the top 100 most significant players in the National Hockey League (NHL) history in 2017. Gartner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (HHOF) in 2001. He has been a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee every year since 2009 and as its Chair every year since 2022. In the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, the Washington Capitals selected Gartner in the first round, fourth overall, to become a team member.

Although still a minor in the 1978–1979 season, he debuted in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Cincinnati Stingers. He finished second in the voting for Rookie of the Year, behind only Wayne Gretzky, while playing on a line with Mark Messier and contributing to the team’s overall success. As a result of the dissolution of the WHA after the season, he joined the Capitals for the next season and would go on to play for them for the more significant part of 10 seasons.

He had an assist on his first game in the National Hockey League, which took place on October 11, 1979, against the Buffalo Sabres. He wore the number eleven sweater for the Washington Capitals. Gartner set a new franchise record the following year by becoming the first Ranger player in franchise history to score at least 40 goals in three consecutive seasons.

In addition to that, he won the Most Valuable Player title for the NHL All-Star Game by scoring four goals in that game. In 2008, the Washington Capitals honored Gartner by retiring the number he wore on the ice. At the trade deadline on March 21, 1994, Gartner was sent to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Glenn Anderson, a player who played in the minor leagues, and a draft selection. Mike Keenan, the head coach of the Rangers, was the driving force for the trade. Keenan did not like Gartner because of his lack of grit and his dismal performances in the playoffs.

Gartner’s contract had one more year remaining on it. In contrast, Anderson was set to become a free agent after the season, and this was the argument that Rangers general manager Neil Smith used to persuade his counterpart at the Maple Leaf’s organization, Cliff Fletcher, to agree to the deal. Before being transferred to the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996, Gartner was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. At the time, the Coyotes had just relocated to Phoenix from Winnipeg.

When the Phoenix Coyotes played the Boston Bruins on October 7, only their second game after relocating, Gartner became the first player in team history to record a goal and a hat trick. Before calling it quits in August 1998, he had played for the Coyotes for two seasons. Gartner never won the Stanley Cup, never played in the Cup Finals, never won an NHL award, and was never nominated to the playoffs All-Star Team. Despite a lengthy and remarkable career, Gartner has yet to achieve these accolades.

He was among the few players in the National Hockey League to achieve this level of success and be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Dino Ciccarelli did not accomplish any of these honors either, even the competing Finals on two occasions. Gartner was a part of the New York Rangers club that won the title in 1994, but at the trade deadline, the Rangers sent him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for another player.
