Kelly Buchberger Biography and Career:

Kelly Michael Buchberger is a coach and former player in the ice hockey leagues of Canadian professional companies. He was born on December 2, 1966. Between 1986 and 2004, he was a member of several National Hockey League clubs. As a coach, he has had positions with teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL), most notably as an assistant with the New York Islanders and as head coach of the Tri-City Americans.

Buchberger’s previous teams include the Edmonton Oilers, the Atlanta Thrashers, the Los Angeles Kings, and the Phoenix Coyotes. He is now a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. In addition, he played junior hockey with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League and professional hockey for the Nova Scotia Oilers of the American Hockey League. In the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, the Edmonton Oilers selected him in the ninth round, making him the 188th overall choice.

His first game in the National Hockey League was in the 1987 Stanley Cup finals. During his time as a player, he was most recognized for his tenacious play and his ability to lead, and he served as the captain of the Oilers for four years, becoming the team’s ninth leader in the franchise’s history. He was a part of the Edmonton Oilers team that won the Stanley Cup in 1987 and 1990. Along with Marty McSorley, Buchberger was the only current Oilers player to have participated on one of the franchise’s five Stanley Cup championship teams.

He continued with the Oilers until 1999 when the Atlanta Thrashers picked him in the NHL Expansion Draft. After that, he played with the Thrashers. Following his retirement, Buchberger worked as an assistant coach with the Edmonton Road Runners of the American Hockey League for the 2004–2005 season. After joining the management staff, he became a development coach for the Oilers organization. He was appointed head coach of the Oilers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Falcons, on August 3, 2007. He led the club to a record of 35–35–10, the first record in the franchise’s history.

Since the 1998–1999 season 500 season. After that, during the summer of the 2008 season for the Edmonton Oilers, Buchberger was elevated to assistant coach for the team. On June 10, 2014, he was moved from the assistant coach’s work to the player personnel job, and Craig Ramsay was promoted to take his place. The New York Islanders announced on July 11, 2017, that they had hired Buchberger to serve as an assistant coach for the team.

He was given the position of head coach of the Tri-City Americans, who play in the Western Hockey League 2018.2021; he was let go from his contract with the Americans. When Kelly Buchberger entered a backup dressing room at Northlands Coliseum, the black aces often used the space to keep their equipment. Kelly was bewildered and scared when he entered the area.

It was the morning before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final in 1987, and he had the idea that he should put in some hard work before watching the celebrations that would take place that night. However, his belongings were kept from being located anywhere. At that point, he was instructed to confer with Glen Sather. Buchberger saw that his nervousness was increasing. Much like Houle, Buchberger was a member of the Edmonton Oilers organization at one point.

He worked there as an assistant for the National Hockey League for a total of six years before being promoted to the positions of director of player personnel and director of player development, places in which he indeed maintained a strong working relationship with Houle, who was a coach for Edmonton’s American Hockey League affiliate at the time. His most recent head coaching gig was with the Tri-City Americans, where he oversaw the team for two seasons. Before that, he was an assistant coach with the New York Islanders.

In addition, Luke Richardson was a member of the Islanders staff. In addition to that, he coached the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League for one season. The former captain of the Edmonton Oilers and veteran assistant coach went looking for another chance, and he got it in the shape of a head coaching position with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League. Instead of wringing his hands and waiting for a probable pink slip himself, the former captain of the Edmonton Oilers and longtime assistant coach went looking.

After working with the Oilers for the previous 12 years in various coaching capacities, including development coach, head coach of the Oilers’ minor league club, assistant coach, and most recently, director of player development, Buchberger spent the previous season as an assistant with the Islanders. The American Hockey League’s Springfield Falcons provided Buchberger with only managerial experience as a head coach over a single season.

The Americans enjoyed a successful regular season a year ago, as seen by their fourth-place finish in the U.S. Division standings with a record of 38-25-8-1. They then advanced to the Western Conference final in the playoffs, where the Everett Silvertips eliminated them.Buchberger served as a coach for the first time in the Western Hockey League during the 2018–19 season. The fact that the Americans have moved up to the second overall choice in this year’s WHL Draft Lottery should make this vacant coaching position appealing to those interested in being hired.
