Black Thought Biography and Career:

Black Thought is known neither as a spotlight-grabbing solo artist nor as the figurehead of the Roots; however, he is widely recognized as one of the most skilled, incisive, and prolific rappers of his time. His career as a member of the Roots began in the 1990s with the recording debut of Organix (1993), and he has been active in the industry ever since. Despite the fact that Thought has been a part of anchoring a dozen studio albums with the Roots, including the Top Ten and Grammy-nominated releases Things Fall Apart (1999), Game Theory (2006), and How I Got Over (2010), anticipation for a solo album has been high ever since the rapper decided to scrap a project for MCA in the early 2000s.

Trotter met the percussionist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson when he was attending the High School for Creative and Performing Arts in Philadelphia. It was then that Trotter further established his passion in painting. The partnership between Trotter and Thompson was established in 1987, and it eventually blossomed into a rap group that, after going through a number of iterations and rebrandings, became known as the Roots.
