Bryan Stevenson Biography and Career:

While still a child, Bryan Stevenson learned that “the world was split in two, and it was obviously different for those who grew up on one side of that divide” while living in an impoverished rural hamlet in Delaware in the ’60s. It was only as he matured that he realized how important human rights and equality were to him as a method to consider how he wanted to spend his time.

His time in Georgia working for the Southern Prisoners Defense Committee (now the Southern Center for Human Rights) exposed him to people in dire need of legal assistance and cases that revealed a stark bias against the poor and people of color. He had no idea what kind of law he wanted to practice or even whether or not he wanted to practice law at all. He was influenced by this experience to pursue a career in litigation and advocacy, which he currently does full-time.

The next year, Stevenson worked as a staff attorney at the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta and then as the executive director of the Alabama Capital Representation Resource Center, where he represented capital defendants. In his view, the courts could protect the rights of marginalized groups where policymakers and other political decision-makers were unwilling to do so as a byproduct of the Civil Rights Movement and all litigation, including Brown v. Board of Education, that was critical to the advocacy for civil rights advancement in the United States.

As executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a nonprofit organization that offers legal counsel to destitute defendants and prisoners who have been denied fair and equal treatment in the court system, 1995 he formed and became executive director of EJI. EJI is a civil rights organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, that takes on cases involving minorities, the poor, and those whose trials have been marred by racial bias or prosecutorial misconduct.

As a result of his work with EJI, Stevenson has helped to overturn or lessen the sentences of more than 75 people facing the capital penalty. He has also served as a valuable training and consultation resource for attorneys representing those on death row. He is currently leading legal action in 19 states to ensure that parole-eligible re-sentence and sentencing reviews are conducted fairly and impartially.

For him, removing life sentences without parole for 13 and 14-year-olds is a matter of national importance. Stevenson emphasizes the importance of “knowing how they get shattered” when he represents death row criminals, juveniles sentenced to life without parole, or anybody else sentenced to jail for various offenses. His goal is to prevent the public from taking on further risks, but he rejects the idea that the only way to create a more healthy community and society is by eliminating those who are damaged in some manner.

A MacArthur Fellowship Award, the Reebok Human Rights Award, and the ACLU National Medal of Liberty are just a few of the honors he has received for his work on behalf of death row inmates. In 1996, the National Association of Public Interest Lawyers recognized him as Public Interest Lawyer of the Year. One of America’s most important lawyers, Stevenson has been named by the National Law Journal numerous times.

It has been proven by Stevenson and EJI that minorities are consistently excluded from jury service and that standards for jury selection monitoring can be used by community workers, attorneys, and advocacy groups. While in Russia, Stevenson was a member of the push to have 800 death sentences reduced during the Yeltsin administration, and he has worked with advocacy groups in Eastern Europe and the Caribbean to minimize executions. Stevenson also addressed Russian MPs.

Currently, a professor of law at NYU Law School, Stevenson joined the clinical faculty in 1998. He has also taught at Harvard, Yale, and the University of Michigan Law Schools as a visiting speaker. He thinks that most law students have good intentions, but that certain norms and values, such as the concept of success in strictly material terms, are reinforced in law school, despite the fact that most law students have good intentions.

The more law schools can support students’ instincts that it is good to be inspirational and idealistic, the better. “There are numerous ways to succeed and achieve and contribute, and making a lot of money is just one little element,” Stevenson says. According to him, he thinks it’s important for law students to be introduced to public service work in order to see how their lives change when they’re exposed to it. Over the past 30 years, there has been a rise in chances for public service, and he sees this as a positive sign for the future of law school.
