The band went back into the studio to make their third album, which was titled Melophobia. In 2019, Cage the Elephant released Social Cues, an album strongly motivated by frontman Matt Shultz’s separation from his wife. The album, produced by John Hill and included the hit “Ready to Let Go” and “Night Running,” which collaborated with Beck, explored a range of gloomy emotions. At the end of the year, Hill was recognized with a Grammy nomination for his contributions to the album, and Social Cues was also recognized with a Grammy award for Best Rock Album.
