D.C. United Biography and Career:
Founded in Washington, D.C., D.C. United is an American professional soccer team. The team is a member of the Eastern Conference in the MLS, the highest level of professional American soccer. In 1996, the team was one of the 10 founding members of the league. Bruce Arena, the team’s former head coach, led them to eight of their first thirteen MLS championships between 1996 and 1998. United has won three U.S. Open Cups, four MLS Cups, and the most Supporters’ Shields in MLS history. MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield in the same season is a first for the team.
CONCACAF Champions League and CONCACAF Champions’ Cup are two of D.C. United’s international competitions. In 1998, they won the CONCACAF Champions Cup, making them one of just two MLS clubs to ever win a CONCACAF event. United went on to defeat Vasco da Gama of Brazil in the 1998 Copa Interamericana final, which is now defunct. An MLS team has never won an international championship.
D.C. United took on the San Jose Clash in the opening game of the league on April 6, 1996, at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, California. DC United was the league’s most successful club in the early years of the MLS. Coach Bruce Arena led the club to the first “double” in modern U.S. soccer history by defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy in their inaugural MLS Cup and the Rochester Raging Rhinos of the USL First Division in 1996 the United States Open Cup in their first year of operation in 1996. D.C. won the 1997 MLS Cup in front of a home crowd at RFK Stadium against the Colorado Rapids. In 1998, the squad won both the Champions’ Cup and the Interamerican Cup in CONCACAF tournaments.
Arena resigned from the squad in October 1998 to take over as head coach of the United States men’s national team. The team’s fortunes took a turn for the worse after Arena’s departure. Thomas Rongen led the team to victory in the MLS Cup in 1999, but poor performances in 2000 and 2001 led to his dismissal and the appointment of Ray Hudson in 2002. Hudson’s tenure was short-lived, as Piotr Nowak took over as coach before the 2004 season began.
Injuries plagued the team’s first season under Nowak, and several players were reported to have criticized Nowak’s coaching style. A successful finish was aided by the late purchase of Christian Gómez from Argentina, who helped catapult United into the playoffs as the second seed in their division.
It has been hailed as one of the greatest games in MLS history when they beat the New England Revolution on penalties. On their way to their fourth MLS Cup title, the Reds beat the Kansas City Wizards. 54,282 were United’s RFK attendance record versus the Tampa Bay Mutiny back in 2001.
First-round selection Freddy Adu, a 14-year-old soccer prodigy, was signed by MLS on November 18, 2003, then on January 16, 2004, he was drafted by Manchester United. It was on April 3, 2004, when Adu came in as a substitute in the second half of United’s regular-season opener that he became America’s youngest professional sports player since 1887. To Real Salt Lake on December 11, 2006, D.C. United traded Adu and goalie Nick Rimando and other future considerations.
The club made MLS history again in 2005 when it became the first American side to compete in the Copa Sudamericana, making it to the Round of 16. With Celtic F.C. and Real Madrid in Seattle in 2006, Manchester United has performed well against international opposition. United’s manager Piotr Nowak was in charge of the 2006 MLS All-Star Team, which comprised eight United players and beat Chelsea in the 2006 MLS All-Star Game. United won the MLS Supporters’ Shield for the first time in consecutive years in 2006 and 2007.
This is the first time in five years that the team has failed to qualify for MLS Cup Playoffs. The only major trophy United earned during this period was the U.S. Open Cup, which they won in 2008. United’s failure to make the playoffs in the 2008 and 2009 seasons was a result of poor performance at the close of both seasons.
In the 2010 MLS season, they won only six games, drew four, and lost twenty more. In the second-to-last week of the season, United again failed to qualify for the playoffs. After missing out on the playoffs five times, Manchester United made a comeback in 2012, winning a spot in the second-to-last week of the regular season.
In 2013, D.C. United has the fewest wins in league history with only three victories. In the U.S. Open Cup final, D.C. United overcame Real Salt Lake despite their terrible league performance. The squad qualified for the 2014–15 CONCACAF Champions League as a result. First place in the Eastern Conference for D.C. United in 2014 was a historic turnaround, as well as their second straight Champions League qualification for the franchise.
George Soros, a wealthy investor, and director of Washington Soccer L.P., the organization that controlled the operational rights to D.C. United, was the league’s principal financial supporter and director when it was created in 1995. Former Soccer USA Partners CEO Kevin Payne was a key figure in putting together this ownership group.

Washington, DC-based developer Victor MacFarlane, founder of MacFarlane Partners, and Westlake International Group chairman William H.C. Chang sold D.C. United’s operating rights to D.C. United Holdings on January 8, 2007. D.C. United president Kevin Payne and former Duke basketball stars Brian Davis and Christian Laettner were among the other investors.
Victor MacFarlane sold his club half to William Chang in April 2009 following two failed stadium bids. Chang acquired Davis and Laettner’s shares in the club in October 2009, putting him in complete control. Chang is also a major investor in the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. Two Philadelphia 76ers minority owners, Erick Thohir and Jason Levien, joined Chang as partners in July 2012. Among Thohir and Levin’s declared priorities is establishing an iconic soccer stadium for United.
