Dennis McKenna Biography and Career:

Dennis Jon McKenna, an American ethnopharmacologist, research pharmacognosist, lecturer, and author, was born on December 17, 1950, in Paonia, Colorado. He is a founding board member and the director of ethnopharmacology at the Heffter Research Institute, a non-profit organization devoted to the exploration of the possible therapeutic uses of psychedelic drugs.

He is the brother of well-known psychedelics proponent Terence McKenna. At the University of Hawaii, McKenna earned his master’s in botany in 1979. He completed a dissertation titled Monoamine oxidase inhibitors in Amazonian hallucinogenic plants: ethnobotanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological research for his PhD in botanical sciences at the University of British Columbia in 1984.

The National Institute of Mental Health’s Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology and Stanford University School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology both offered McKenna post-doctoral research scholarships after that. The research of McKenna helped Aveda Corporation create natural products and raised public knowledge of herbal remedies.

He is the author of many books and scientific articles. He co-wrote Botanical Medicines: the Desk Reference for Major Herbal Supplements with Kenneth Jones and Kerry Hughes as well as The Invisible Landscape with his brother Terence.

McKenna worked for a number of years as a senior lecturer at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities’ Academic Health Center’s Center for Spirituality and Healing. He is currently a senior research scientist for the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Natural Health Products Research Group in the Vancouver region.

His master’s thesis, which was about ayahuasca and oo-koo-hé, included their pharmacology, botany, and chemistry. Additionally, he has done a lot of fieldwork in the Amazon regions of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. The McKenna brothers and Jeremy Bigwood created a method for growing psilocybin mushrooms in the early 1970s, and they shared what they had learned in a book titled Psilocybin – Magic Mushroom Grower’s Guide.

The first to develop a trustworthy method for growing psilocybin mushrooms at home was the Bigwood and McKenna team. The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss, McKenna’s biography on his life and their shared travels, was released in 2012.

In the film DMT: The Spirit Molecule, he appears. McKenna took part in Pittsburgh’s inaugural Evolver Convergence 2012, which took place June 1–4. On multiple occasions, the popular radio program Coast to Coast AM featured him as the featured guest.

The episode on Sunday, March 23, 2014, was his final appearance on the program. McKenna appeared as a guest on three occasions in 2018: June 21 and December 16 of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. On September 18, 2018, Dennis appeared as a featured guest on The Cosmic Echo Podcast.
