Eoin Morgan Biography and Career:

With international experience for both Ireland and England, Eoin Joseph Gerard Morgan has acquired a reputation as an innovative and free-stroking middle order batsman, particularly in the shorter versions of the game. Looking back at Morgan’s early career, we can see that he was a significant member of the Irish young teams at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels. At the age of 17, he was picked to represent Ireland in the Under-19 World Cup, where he finished as the team’s leading scorer with four goals. His leadership abilities were recognised two years later when he was named captain of the Under-19 team, which concluded the tournament as the second-highest run-scorer.

The only other player in the history of the game to be dismissed for 99 runs on debut was Morgan, who was removed for 99 in his ODI debut for Ireland against Scotland back in August 2006. The next year, against Canada, ‘Moggie’ scored his first One-Day International century, becoming him the youngest player from outside the subcontinent to do so. Morgan, at 21 years old, was a key member of Ireland’s World Cup-winning squad in 2007, which advanced to the Super Eights after a spirited performance. The southpaw, who batted third, didn’t have a very successful campaign, managing just 91 runs in nine innings.

After playing for the England Lions during a tour match against South Africa, the southpaw gained widespread attention in the United Kingdom. During the game, he and Samit Patel put up an unbroken 113-run partnership that guided the Lions to a six-wicket win. Morgan was picked to the 30-man roster for the International Cricket Council’s World Twenty20 tournament after his outstanding performances for the English Lions. He was therefore forced to retire from international cricket since he was selected for England’s World Twenty20 team, which included him.

Morgan’s major break came during the Champions Trophy in South Africa in 2009, when Matt Prior was unable to play, allowing Morgan to fill in for him and keep wickets for the England team. While striking 67 off 34 balls against South Africa, he made back-to-back 60s against Sri Lanka. He seemed to like the South African assault, scoring 60 off 60 balls against them.

In May 2010, he made his Test debut against Bangladesh, scoring 44 runs in the opening innings of the match. Later that year, in the one-day international series against Australia, Morgan hit an unbeaten 103 off only 85 balls in the first game, followed by a 50 in the second to earn the Player of the Series title. Morgan was also named Player of the Series in the T20I series against New Zealand. The stunning 45-ball 85 he produced in a Twenty20 encounter against South Africa further confirmed his spot in the English team’s starting lineup.

In the third IPL auction, Morgan was one of the better bargains, with the Royal Challengers Bangalore snatching him up for USD 220,000, much below his basic price of USD 220,000. However, his performance in that season was disappointing. Morgan’s performance in the Indian Premier League 2011 was somewhat better, as he represented Kolkata and scored 137 runs in nine innings.

Following a good domestic season, he was picked to represent the United States in the Sri Lanka Test series. In four innings, he scored 168 runs, including two half-centuries, to win the game. Morgan also scored 158 runs in the One-Day International series. Later that year, he was appointed as England’s vice-captain for the Twenty20 international team.

At the 50-over World Cup, which was held in the subcontinent in 2011, Morgan was called in to replace Kevin Pietersen, who had been injured throughout the course of the competition. He became just the fourth player in the history of the Cricket World Cup to have represented two separate countries. Even though Morgan recorded two half-tons in three innings, each of his hits came in a losing effort.

Morgan got just 19 runs in the first three innings of the Test series against India in 2011. The series ended in a draw. In the end, he returned with a bang, scoring a blistering half-century against a mediocre Indian bowling attack. His century in the third Test, in which England accumulated more than 700 runs, was a stunning achievement.

Immediately after the India series, Cook was rested for a one-off One-Day International (ODI) against Ireland, and Morgan took the reins as England’s captain, becoming just the third Irishman to do so (the other two being Timothy O’Brien and Frederick Fane). What followed was a disappointing tour of the United Arab Emirates, when Morgan was only able to score 82 runs at an average of 13.66 in three Tests. He was eventually omitted from the team’s trip to Sri Lanka in March 2012, when they played a two-match Test series. His subsequent excursion was minimal, and a thumb injury did little to improve his case.
