Eva Marie Saint Biography and Career:

American actress Eva Marie Saint had a long acting career spanning cinema, theater, radio, and television. She was born on July 4, 1924. Throughout her 75-year career, she has garnered several accolades, including two Oscars, a Primetime Emmy, a Golden Globe, and two BAFTA nominations.

Not only is Saint one of the few remaining stars from Hollywood’s Golden Age, but she is also the oldest and first-ever recipient of an Academy Award. Saint, who was born and brought up in New York but attended Bowling Green State University, started her acting career in the late 1940s, appearing on television and radio.

Among her early significant credits is her portrayal of Thelma in the Tony Award–winning stage adaptation of Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful (1953), which she originated for NBC. The Outer Critics Circle honored her for her portrayal in the theatrical production. Starring alongside Marlon Brando, she made her film début in On the Waterfront (1954) by Elia Kazan.

Along with her Best Supporting Actress Oscar and BAFTA Most Promising Newcomer nominations, the picture took home eight Oscars overall, including Best Picture. Most people agree that it is one of the best movies of all time and that it catapulted her to stardom.

Saint went on to star in several supporting roles, including Bob Hope’s That Certain Feeling (1956), Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor’s Raintree County (1957), and Don Murray and Anthony Franciosa in Fred Zinnemann’s A Hatful of Rain (1957), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.

Among her most famous parts was that of Eve Kendall, which she played alongside Cary Grant in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock film North by Northwest. Saint kept a busy film career throughout the ’60s, appearing in films such as Exodus (1960) with Paul Newman, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1965) with Carl Reiner and Alan Arkin, The Sandpiper (1965) with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and Grand Prix (1966) by John Frankenheimer.

For her roles in the anthology programs Producers’ Showcase (1955) and The Philco Television Playhouse (1954), Saint received two Primetime Emmy nominations for Best Actress in a Single Performance (1955). Despite receiving accolades for her performance in Loving (1970) with George Segal, her film career started to fall in the 1970s.

In 1977, she received further consecutive nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for How the West Was Won and in 1978, for Taxi!!!, and in 1990, for People Like Us, she won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special. Saint made a triumphant comeback to the big screen in Nothing in Common (1986), starring alongside Tom Hanks. She continues to make sporadic appearances in films including Superman Returns (2006), The Legend of Korra (2012–2014), and Winter’s Tale (2014), co-starring Colin Farrell.

Saint got her start in the TV industry as an NBC page. During the 1946 and 1947 seasons of Campus Hoopla, she made an appearance on the live NBC television program. A rare kinescope captured her appearances on this show, and the Library of Congress has audio recordings of the broadcasts. A 1949 appearance on NBC’s Bonnie Maid’s Versa-Tile Varieties had her as one of the first singing “Bonnie Maids” featured in the live broadcasts.

Both the 1947 Life Magazine special and the 1949 feature piece featured Saint as an actress attempting to make ends meet in New York City on meager earnings from early television, which she had been a part of. Saint kept working extensively in radio and television in the late 1940s to support herself.

Along with Jo Van Fleet and Lillian Gish, she appeared on Broadway in 1953 in Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful, for which she was named Drama Critics Award winner. After portraying the youthful mistress of middle-aged E. G. Marshall in Paddy Chayefsky’s Middle of the Night on The Philco Television Playhouse, Saint received her first Emmy nomination for “Best Actress In A Single Performance” in 1955.
