Magnum T. A. Biography and Career:

A former American professional wrestler, Terry Wayne Allen was born on June 11, 1959. He is best known for his ring moniker, Magnum T. A., which he used after retiring from the sport. Allen had already won the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship twice and was ready to make a run at the NWA World Heavyweight Championship when he was involved in a vehicle accident in 1986. However, the accident caused him to retire from the sport.

Magnum T. A. continued to perform in non-wrestling roles in several organizations after he retired from the sport of wrestling. When Allen made his debut in Mid-South, he changed his name to “Magnum T. A.” and adopted a persona that was known as the “American Heart Throb.” This was because Allen had a minor similarity to Tom Selleck, an actor who was acting in the famous television series Magnum, P.I. at the time.

After AndrĂ© the Giant advised that Allen combine the Magnum moniker with the initials of his name, Allen decided to take the ring name as a result of this suggestion. After wrestling in Mid-South, he defeated Mr. Wrestling II on May 13, 1984, which resulted in him winning the North American Heavyweight Championship. This was the first big championship that he had ever received. “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd would eventually take the title away from Magnum on October 16, after he had held it for five months.

Magnum was defeated by Ladd in a rematch for the championship on November 22. Ladd was disqualified from the fight. Jim Crockett Promotions, which was a part of the National Wrestling Alliance, signed Allen in the year 1984. The rivalry between Magnum and Wahoo McDaniel started shortly after Magnum made his debut. On March 23, 1985, Magnum triumphed over McDaniel to win the United States Heavyweight Championship. Through his victory against Kamala at The Great American Bash, he was able to successfully defend his championship victory.

After that, he started a rivalry with the Four Horsemen, and then he began a feud primarily with Horsemen member Tully Blanchard and his valet Baby Doll, which occurred on July 21. He ultimately lost the championship to Baby Doll. Ric Flair, the leader of the Horsemen, defeated Magnum in a championship bout that lasted for over thirty minutes on September 28. The match was for Flair’s World Heavyweight Championship. Magnum would win back the United States championship in the illustrious “I Quit” bout that took place at Starrcade on November 28.

The dispute between Magnum and Ivan Koloff began in April 1986. Ivan Koloff had been asserting that his nephew, Nikita, would become the United States Heavyweight Champion. Magnum began to take issue with this assertion. Magnum was able to get a contract agreement with Jim Crockett Jr. to defend his championship against Nikita in May. Nikita accompanied Ivan to the signing, while Magnum brought his mother, Marion. Magnum was present during the signing.

At the same time, Nikita insulted Magnum’s mother, which led to a fight between the two of them at the signing. During that time, Bob Geigel, who was serving as the president of the NWA at the time, issued a public reprimand on Magnum for “conduct unbecoming a champion.” Although he was pounding Geigel, Magnum responded by saying, “Reprimand this!” As a consequence of this, Magnum was disqualified from his championship, and Nikita and Magnum were forced to compete against each other in a best-of-seven series of matches.

Magnum made a comeback after losing the first three matches in a row against Nikita. He won the subsequent three matches to keep the series running, which allowed him to keep the sequence going. With the assistance of Ivan and Krusher Khruschev, Nikita was able to capture the championship by defeating Magnum in the match that broke the tie on August 17, 1986, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Allen was driving his Porsche in the rain on October 14, 1986, when he unfortunately lost control of the vehicle and collided with a telephone pole. The collision took place on Sardis Road in Charlotte, North Carolina, which was just a few miles away from his home. At first, the detectives thought that he was going too fast for the conditions, but the forensic investigations revealed that he was driving within the legal speed limit. Additionally, he was left in his vehicle for two hours before a witness contacted 911.

The collision caused his C-4 and C-5 vertebrae to “explode,” and at the time, it was uncertain if he would ever be able to walk again after he recovered from the injury. As a result of Allen’s physical training, the doctors at Carolinas Medical Center were able to preserve his life. His in-ring career came to an end as a result of the paralysis that he experienced on the right side of his body for many months. The NWA booker Dusty Rhodes turned Nikita Koloff, Allen’s final competitor before his accident, into a babyface when Allen’s career as a wrestler came to an end.

The conflict between the two characters resulted in Koloff gaining respect for Magnum, and he desired to succeed Magnum as a result of this regard. This was commemorated in the spring issue of the Wrestling ’87 magazine, which included a giant portrait of Koloff with the words “I cry for Magnum T.A.” written next to him. Magnum was on his way to becoming the NWA World Heavyweight Champion until he was involved in an accident that prevented him from achieving his goal of winning the United States Championship for the third time.
