Gerrit Cole Biography and Career:

Gerrit Alan Cole is a professional American baseball pitcher for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). Cole was born on September 8, 1990, in the United States. He has a history of playing for teams such as the Houston Astros and the Pittsburgh Pirates. While attending Orange Lutheran High School, Cole participated on the varsity baseball team. In the first round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, the New York Yankees picked Cole.

Cole made the decision not to sign and went on to study at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was a member of the UCLA Bruins baseball team during his time there. After a successful collegiate baseball career, the Pirates selected Cole first in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. In 2013, he made his debut in Major League Baseball (MLB), and in September of the same year, the National League (NL) awarded him Rookie of the Month.

He was selected as the National League Pitcher of the Month for April 2015 and was selected as an MLB All-Star in the same year. In the summer between the 2017–18 seasons, the Pirates made a deal with the Astros to send Cole to Houston. On September 18, 2019, Cole became the 18th pitcher in the history of the big leagues to record at least 300 strikeouts against opposing hitters throughout a single season.

On December 16, 2019, the Yankees set a new club record by signing Cole to a nine-year deal for $324 million. This is the most significant contract total in the history of the major leagues for a pitcher. The UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame will induct Cole into its class of 2022 in the year 2022. Additionally, he holds the record for the most strikeouts in a single season for the Astros (2019) and the Yankees (2022), with 326 and 257, respectively, in both seasons.

Cole was selected by the USA Today for their All-USA high school baseball team in the year 2008.[5] According to Baseball America, he was the seventeenth-best prospect eligible for the Major League Baseball draft in 2008. The Orange County North–South All-Star Game in 2008 will feature him as the opening pitcher for the North team. After completing his senior year, Cole was taken by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. The New York Yankees chose him with the 28th overall pick, making him the first player to be drafted out of Orange Lutheran High School.

It was rumored that the Yankees intended to pay Cole a signing bonus of $4 million, which is a figure that is more than the amount that is advised for the slot. The Yankees waited until the last moment to make an offer to acquire Cole because they intended to give him a significant signing bonus.

As the deadline drew near, Cole and his family had already given a lot of thought to a variety of factors, including a comparison between players who sign out of high school and those who go to college, and had concluded that Cole should honor his commitment to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on a college baseball scholarship.

Cole never bargained with the Yankees even though Scott Boras represented him, and the Yankees were rumored to be ready to give upwards of $4 million. Cole was adamant about attending college. Thus he chose not to engage with the Yankees. At UCLA, he received a political science degree and completed coursework in theater as a minor. When Cole was a freshman on the UCLA Bruins team, his coach John Savage decided to start him on the mound for the team on Friday nights.

During that season, Cole finished with a win–loss record of 4–8, an earned run average of 3.49, and 104 strikeouts in 85 innings pitched. In 2009, Cole was a part of the United States collegiate national baseball team, and the following year, he was included on the roster for the United States Collegiate National Team.2010 was the year he took part in the World University Baseball Championship.

Cole and Trevor Bauer were vital contributors to the success of the UCLA Bruins baseball team in the 2010 season, which saw the Bruins finish with a record of 51–17, making them the most incredible team in the school’s history and the second-best team in the nation. Cole finished his career with a win–loss record of 11–4, an earned run average of 3.37, and 153 strikeouts in 123 innings pitched. Cole finished his college pitching career ranked third all-time with 153 strikeouts.

The Bruins made it to the College World Series in 2010. However, they ended up losing to South Carolina in the championship series of the NCAA tournament. Before starting the 2011 Major League Baseball draft, Cole, Bauer, and Danny Hultzen, who had also pitched in college, were regarded as some of the most promising prospects in the draft pool. Cole was the first player in the draft, and the Pittsburgh Pirates used their first pick to choose him.

On August 15, 2011, 15 minutes before the signing deadline, he signed a minor league deal with a signing bonus of $8 million. This was the biggest signing bonus ever awarded to a rookie. Even though he signed too late to play in the 2011 minor league season, he did throw in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) with the Mesa Solar Sox.

In 15 innings pitched with the Solar Sox, he had 16 strikeouts, a 3.00 earned run average (ERA), 0.93 walks plus hits per inning thrown ratio (WHIP), and a 3.00 walks plus hits per inning pitched ratio (WHIP). In November of 2011, he was given the honor of starting for the AFL Rising Stars game. In 2012, the Pirates invited Cole to participate in spring training as a non-roster invitee; however, they ultimately decided to send him down to the minors.
