Zack Wheeler Biography and Career:

Zachary Harrison Wheeler is a professional American baseball pitcher who plays for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball (MLB). Wheeler was born on May 30, 1990, in the United States. He played with the New York Mets in Major League Baseball from 2013 till 2019. In Smyrna, Georgia, Wheeler was born into a family that played baseball, but his family relocated to Dallas, Georgia, just before his high school career began.

There, he was a pitcher for East Paulding High School, where he was instrumental in the school’s run to the state playoffs in 2009 and tossed a perfect game against Mill Creek High School. Wheeler was taken sixth overall by the San Francisco Giants in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. After being selected, Wheeler decided to sign with the organization rather than uphold his earlier commitment to play college baseball for Kennesaw State.

Before being sent to the Mets in July 2011, Wheeler spent 2010 and 2011 playing for the Giants’ farm systems in the minor leagues. Following the deal, Wheeler quickly advanced through the Mets’ little system and debuted in the leading companies in 2013. Despite the Mets’ general lack of success in 2013 and 2014, his play was a bright spot for the team.

However, Wheeler’s growth ended abruptly when he tore his ulnar collateral ligament during spring training in 2015. This setback prevented him from continuing his baseball career. He had Tommy John surgery to treat the injury and was anticipated to return to pitching sometime during the 2016 season. However, Wheeler could not return to the mound until the 2017 season due to a series of setbacks throughout his recovery.

Wheeler had a triumphant return to form with the Mets in 2018, hitting a new career best in both the number of strikeouts and the number of innings thrown. Wheeler’s 2017 season was cut short due to injury. After the conclusion of the 2019 season, he was eligible to become a free agent, and in December 2019, he agreed to a contract with the Phillies that would last for five years. Because of an injury to his fingernail, Wheeler was sidelined for a portion of the 2020 season.

However, he began the year 2021 on a solid note, becoming just the fourth pitcher in the team’s history to record at least ten strikeouts in his first three starts. When Zack was 13, his family relocated to Dallas in Georgia. Wheeler went to East Paulding High School, where he participated in the baseball and basketball sports teams, rather than Campbell High School, where his brothers had gone.

Wheeler was honored as the Georgia High School Association 4A Region Pitcher of the Year in 2008 after compiling an 8–3 win–loss record, a 1.31 earned run average (ERA), 127 strikeouts in 64+1/3 innings worked, and was awarded the Georgia High School Association Pitcher of the Year. The following year, he led his team to a 9–0 record, with a 0.54 earned run average, and was awarded the Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year. He also established a school record with 149 strikeouts in 76 innings pitched, which earned him the award.

During his final year, Wheeler also had a batting average of.280 when he was used in the designated hitter role. Wheeler threw his first no-hitter during the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs in 2009. The game was played against Mill Creek High School. in 2015 when East Paulding officially retired Wheeler’s No. 45 jersey.

Wheeler was the sixth player taken overall in the first round of the 2009 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. He was chosen by the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB).[8] At the time, he had already decided to attend Kennesaw State University to play collegiate baseball. Wheeler decided to join the Giants on August 17, 2009, which resulted in him receiving a signing bonus of $3.3 million as part of the contract.

At the beginning of the 2010 baseball season, Wheeler was given a position with the Class A Augusta GreenJackets of the South Atlantic League. Due to a fingernail injury on the middle finger of his throwing hand at the beginning of the year, he was put on the injured list. Wheeler edneeded to sit out of action for six weeks before being transferred to San Francisco to consult the team’s hand expert.

After some time had passed, he went back to the GreenJackets and made a few appearances in relief before getting back into the starting rotation. Wheeler appeared in 21 games for Augusta, including 13 starts, and finished with a record of 3–3 with an earned run average of 3.99. He struck out 70 batters in 58 2/3 innings of work. Additionally, he participated in the All-Star Futures Game held in Anaheim, California, in 2010.

Baseball America ranked Wheeler as the second-best prospect for the Giants organization before the start of the 2011 season and said that he had the “best fastball” among all the Giants’ young pitchers. He was given a position with the Class A-Advanced San Jose Giants, with a record of 7–5 with a 3.99 earned run average and 98 strikeouts in 88 innings thrown in 16 starts. In addition, he was a participant in the California League All-Star Game in 2011.

Wheeler debuted in the big leagues on June 18, 2013, against the Atlanta Braves. He pitched a perfect game throughout six innings in the second game of a doubleheader. In their win with a score of 6–1, Wheeler had seven strikeouts and only allowed four hits. Two months later, on August 15, Wheeler defeated the San Diego Padres by a score of 4-1 while setting a career-best with 12 strikeouts and winning.
