Unlike his iconic father, Hank Williams, Jr. has built a lucrative career that is distinct from his father’s. As he grew older, Hank Jr. began to carve out his own niche that owed as much to country rock as it did to honky tonk. During the late ’70s and early ’80s, he retooled his image to appeal to both outlaw country fans and boisterous Southern rockers.

Hank Williams Jr. was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1949. Sadly, his father died in less than four years. When Hank Jr. was eight, Audrey chose to make him the heir to his father’s legacy. Williams’ career was rejuvenated when tragedy struck. In 1975, while climbing a mountain in Montana, he plummeted 442 feet. His skull was shattered and his face smashed, yet he lived. He had to relearn how to speak and sing after severe cosmetic surgery. Williams’ recuperation took two years. When Hank Jr. returned in 1977, Waylon Jennings produced his comeback album, The New South.

Williams scored two Top Ten songs in the last six months of 1979, “Family Tradition” and “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound,” which launched a nearly uninterrupted string of 29 Top Ten hits that lasted until 1988. Rowdy Hank Jr. was a popular and controversial character in country music throughout the 1980s. His hell-raising songs and jingoistic ballads attracted young and unruly fans after his image makeover. It was as much a part of his act as his redneck rockers.

Hank Jr.’s raucous songs and party-like concerts made him a huge hit with the rock & roll crowd. In 1981, Williams scored three number one songs — “Texas Women,” “Dixie on My Mind,” and “All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)” — and Rowdy began a 15-year gold or platinum record streak. In 1987 and 1988, he was named Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year. Old School New Rules, released in 2012, included Brad Paisley and Trace Adkins as guests and marks Williams’ debut release on his own Bocephus Records, a Nashville-based indie label. Williams returned to the spotlight four years later, signing with Nash Icon, Big Machine’s country heritage label, and releasing It’s About Time in January 2016.
