John Cleese Biography and Career:

John Cleese is a British comedian, actor, producer, and writer. Possibly one of the few comedians to come up with fresh, inventive slapstick antics and puerile character sketches, he is the most admired personality in British comedy. Cleese attended law school at Cambridge University and was a member of the prestigious “Footlights Dramatic Club” when he was there. After finding his humorous niche on ‘Footlights,’ he was quickly recruited to join the wildly popular ‘Footlights’ revue, ‘Cambridge Circus.’ This served as a springboard for his stand-up comedy career.

In time, he joined the ranks of the infamous comedy troupe, “Monty Python.” The collective produced ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus,’ a British sketch comedy show. In addition to appearing in their movies like “And Now for Something Completely Different,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “Life of Brian,” and “The Meaning of Life,” he was also a member of the group. He also co-created the Emmy-winning comedy Fawlty Towers, in which he portrayed the title character, Basil Fawlty. John Cleese is also a published author who has written “Families and How to Survive Them” and “Life and How to Survive It” with his wife, Catherine.

John Marwood Cleese was born on October 27, 1939, to insurance salesman Reginald Francis Cleese and Muriel Evelyn in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, England. He went to “St Peter’s Preparatory School,” where he excelled in English, played cricket, and boxed on the varsity teams. At the tender age of twelve, he was cast in his first school play.

He was accepted to the English public school “Clifton College” in Bristol at 13 years old and given a scholarship. He could pursue his passion for professional cricket and studies to the fullest. After finishing his undergraduate studies at Clifton College in 1958, he returned to his old school, St. Peter’s Preparatory School, to begin his teaching career. His curriculum included teaching Latin, English, Geography, and History.

As early as 1960, he was accepted to Cambridge University’s ‘Downing College,’ where he eventually earned a law degree. While at ‘Footlights,’ he was introduced to his future business partner, Graham Chapman. In 1961, he contributed to the revue “Footlights Dramatic Club Presents: I Thought I Saw It Move” by writing new material. The first three of his four marriages ended in divorce. His three ex-wives are Connie Booth, Barbara Trentham, and Alyce Faye Eichelberger. He wed Jennifer Wade in 2012.

In the same year, he began working as one of the show’s authors and performers in “A Clump of Plinths,” a revue produced by “Footlights.” ‘Cambridge Circus’ premiered on London’s ‘West End’ on July 10, 1963. New Zealand audiences were treated to four radio broadcasts and a television special the year after the show’s first run there.

In October 1964, he appeared on the CBS variety show “The Ed Sullivan Show.” After leaving Cambridge Circus, he began appearing on and off Broadway. He also contributed to “The Dick Emery Show” as a sketch writer. He and Graham Chapman worked on the TV spoof “At Last the 1948 Show” as writers and actors in 1967. In the British comedy picture, Clockwise released the following year; he portrayed the part of Mr. Stimpson, a strict school principal.

In 1988’s “A Fish Called Wanda,” a heist comedy that won an “Academy” award, he portrayed “Lawyer Archie Leach.” He starred in movies like “Erik the Viking” and “The Big Picture” the following year. He portrayed ‘R.’ in the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough. He repeated his role as “R.” in the second James Bond film, “Die Another Day.” ‘Rat Race,’ a 2001 Jerry Zucker comedy, featured him in a supporting role.
