Johnny Mercer Biography and Career:

John Herndon Mercer (November 18, 1909 – June 25, 1976) was an American lyricist, composer, and vocalist who lived from 1909 to 1976 in Los Angeles. Aside from that, he was a successful record label entrepreneur who co-founded Capitol Records with fellow music industry executives Buddy DeSylva and Glenn E. Wallichs.

He is primarily recognized for his work as a Tin Pan Alley lyricist, although he also wrote music for other artists. From the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s, he was also a prominent singer, who recorded both his own compositions and songs written by others during his recording career. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, “Autumn Leaves,” and “Hooray for Hollywood” were some of Mercer’s most popular songs at the period, and he is best known for them. In addition to writing the words for more than 1,500 songs, he also composed music for movies and Broadway productions. He garnered nineteen Academy Award nominations and was awarded four Academy Awards for Best Original Song.

Born in Savannah, Georgia, Mercer’s first work was scrubbing the floors of Leopold’s Ice Cream’s original 1919 site when he was 10 years old, which was one of his first occupations. At the time, Mercer was living on Lincoln Street, only a few blocks from the store’s East Gwinnett and Habersham locations.

A successful attorney and real-estate developer, Mercer’s father, George Anderson Mercer, was the inspiration for his son. Lillian Elizabeth (née Ciucevich), Mercer’s mother, was the daughter of a Croatian immigrant father and an Irish mother who came to the United States as a child. Lillian Mercer, the elder Mercer’s secretary, and second wife was a close friend of the family.

Lillian’s father, Ivan Cucevic, was born in Lastovo, Serbia, in 1834 to Ivana Cucevic and Marijo Dundovic, and worked as a merchant sailor during the American Civil War, running the Union blockade. Mercer was George’s fourth son and his first son with Lillian. He was the youngest of four sons. In addition to being a direct descendant of American Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer, who perished at the Battle of Princeton, his great-grandfather was Confederate General Hugh Weedon Mercer, and he was a direct descendant of Confederate General Hugh Weedon Mercer. Mercer was also a distant relative of General George S. Patton, who was born in the same year.

When Mercer was a youngster, he enjoyed music and ascribed his musical ability to his mother, who would sing emotional songs in the family. Mercer’s father was also a singer, specializing in ancient Scottish tunes. When he was six months old, his aunt informed him that he was humming music, and she subsequently brought him to watch minstrel and vaudeville acts, where he heard “coon tunes” and ragtime. His childhood vacation house, “Vernon View,” was located on tidal waters, and Mercer’s long summer days spent there amid mossy trees, salty marshes, and soft, starry evenings served as an inspiration for him years thereafter.

When it came to the white composers of his period, Mercer had possibly the most extensive exposure to black music. He had African American playmates and slaves when he was a boy. He also paid attention to the fishermen and sellers who lived nearby and sang in a dialect known as Geechee, which Mercer picked up from them. He was also drawn to Black church services, which he found appealing. “Songs have always captivated me more than anything else,” Mercer subsequently said. With no formal musical instruction, he was already singing in a chorus by the age of six, and by the age of 11 or 12, he had remembered almost all of the songs he had heard and was inquisitive as to who had written them. He once asked his brother who the finest songwriter was, and his brother responded with Irving Berlin, who was considered to be among the best of the Tin Pan Alley songwriters.

Despite Mercer’s early exposure to music, his natural ability was evident in the creation of lyrics and singing, rather than in the performance of music, though he had aspirations to become a composer. In addition to memorizing song lyrics, Mercer was a voracious reader and a writer of adventure novels. The trumpet and the piano were not among the instruments he attempted to learn to play, and he was never able to read musical sheets with any proficiency, instead of depending on his own notation system.

He was a product of his time when he was a teenager during the Jazz Era. He looked for recordings in the black district of Savannah and played early black blues and jazz performers such as Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Louis Armstrong, as well as contemporary black blues and jazz figures. Mercer’s adolescent social life was enriched by his father’s ownership of the first automobile in town, and his driving privileges, which sometimes bordered on recklessness, contributed to this. The family would take a road trip to the mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, to get away from the oppressive heat of Savannah. It was there that Mercer learned to dance (from Arthur Murray himself) and flirt with Southern belles, his inherent sense of rhythm assisting him in both situations. (Mercer would later write a funny song titled “Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry” to commemorate the occasion.)

Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where Mercer was educated until 1927, was a prestigious institution. His involvement in literary and poetry clubs as well as his work as a comedy writer for the school’s publications despite his lack of academic excellence were notable. He also benefited from his exposure to classic literature, which enriched his already extensive library of vocabulary and phraseology. He started to draw down brilliant, if not forced, rhymed sentences that he would later use. Mercer was also known as the class clown and joker, as well as a member of the “hop” committee, which was in charge of booking musical entertainment for the school.

At a young age, Mercer had already established himself as somewhat of a jazz expert. According to his yearbook, “Without Johnny’s seal of approval, no orchestra or new production can be legitimately referred to as “excellent.” His amazing capacity to ‘go hot’ under any and all circumstances and at any moment is astounding.” Mercer started to create songs, with his first attempt being “Sister Susie, Strut Your Stuff,” which was released in 1957.

His father’s financial difficulties in the late 1920s prevented Mercer from continuing his education at Princeton University, something he had been groomed to do because of his family’s historical affiliation with the town of Princeton, New Jersey, and Princeton University. When he was younger, he worked in his father’s recovery company, collecting rent and doing errands, but he quickly became disinterested in the routine and in Savannah.
