Justin Gatlin Biography and Career:

Justin Gatlin is an American sprinter who won the gold medal in the 100-meter dash at the 2004 Summer Olympics in 9.85 seconds. His personal best in the 100-meter dash is 9.74 seconds, which he set in 2004. He was an exceptional athlete who turned pro in his teens after being offered a lucrative endorsement contract by Nike Inc., an American multinational corporation based in California. He won the 60-meter dash at the World Indoor Championships twice in a row.

He has, on the other hand, been involved in controversy for the wrong reasons. In 2001, he was subjected to a two-year suspension from athletics after testing positive for a prohibited substance. When he tested positive for a banned substance for the second time in 2006, he was barred from competing in field and track events for the next four years.

This time, his then-world record time of 9.77 seconds in the 100m, set in May 2006, was also overturned. Upon making his international return in August 2010, he set the fastest time ever achieved by any male athlete over the age of thirty at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials in June, running a time of 9.80 seconds. On July 18, 2014, his time of 19.68 seconds in the 200m at the ‘IAAF Diamond League’ event in Monaco propelled him to the top of the world rankings for the year 2014.

His parents, Willie Gatlin and Jeanette Gatlin welcomed him into the world on February 10, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York.
He grew up in Pensacola, Florida, where he attended the ‘Woodham High School.’ He is the father of two children. While at school, he maintained his position as the team’s fastest runner. He used to compete in high hurdles and was a key member of the team that won the state championship.

‘University of Tennessee’ coaches Vince Anderson and Bill Webb took notice of Gatlin and offered him a scholarship to compete in the sprints. Gatlin accepted the scholarship. As a result, he was recruited by the ‘University of Tennessee’ in Knoxville in the fall of 2000 as a talented 110m hurdler.

In 2000, he turned professional and signed a lucrative endorsement contract with Nike, Inc., the world’s largest sports company.
The following few years were spent receiving his training and also completing the university’s programme under the supervision of Vince Anderson. He went on to win six ‘National Collegiate Athletic Association’ (‘NCAA’) sprint championships in a row and also led the ‘Volunteers’ to two ‘NCAA’ championships in a row in the long jump.

Following a positive test for the central nervous system stimulant drug amphetamines in 2001, he was barred from international competition for two years. Appellant argued that he had been taking it as a medication for attention deficit disorder since childhood and that this was the reason for his appeal. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) lifted his suspension in the fall of 2002.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics, he defeated Portugal’s Francis Obikwelu and defending champion Maurice Greene in the 100m sprint with a time of 9.85 seconds, which was the third-fastest time in the history of the Olympics. He went on to win the gold medal. As a member of the USA 4x100m relay team, he won a bronze and a silver medal in the 200m race, respectively, as part of a sweep of the event by the Americans.
On August 7, 2005, he beat 2003 champion Kim Collins to win the gold medal in the 100m sprint at the 2005 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Athletics held in Helsinki, Finland, in a time of 9.88 seconds.

Despite the absence of Asafa Powell, the Jamaican sprinter who was then the world record holder in the 100m, Gatlin won the Olympic and World Championship double after defeating his opponents by the widest margin ever achieved by any sprinter in a World Championship 100m for men. In the same year, he also won the 200m, making him only the second sprinter in history (after Maurice Greene) to win both the 100m and 200m sprints at the same World Championships in the same year.

On May 12, 2006, he ran in the final of the IAAF Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar, and set a new world record of 9.77 seconds in the 100 metres, which he shared with Powell (who set the record in 2005). When Gatlin ran 9.76 seconds plus 1.7 m/s wind, it was initially reported that the American had broken the record. However, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) later revealed that the time was actually 9.766 seconds, which translates to 9.77 seconds after rounding off according to rules.

Soon after, Gatlin and Powell appeared at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, where the track and field community had called for a showdown between the two. However, they were unable to reach an agreement with the meet’s organisers, and their appearance was cancelled. As a result, the two athletes competed in separate heats, with Gatlin taking first place in the event with a time of 9.88 seconds, while Powell finished second with a time of 9.93 seconds. Following a relay race in Lawrence, Kansas, on April 22, 2006, he tested positive for a prohibited substance for the second time, this time most likely testosterone or a testosterone precursor.

On August 22, 2006, he was barred from participating in track and field for the next eight years. In light of the fact that he already had a record of a doping incident and subsequent ban from the game, he cooperated with doping authorities in order to avoid a lifetime ban and agreed to the suspension. On appeal, the ban was later decreased to four years by an arbitration panel in December 2007, which ruled in his favour. However, his 9.77-second time, which he tied with Powell in May 2006, was stricken from the record books. During his four-year suspension, he intended to put his athletic ability to use in other sports, such as football. On November 29, 2006, ESPN reported that he had participated in a workout with the NFL’s Houston Texans.
