Kali Uchis Biography and Career:

Karly-Marina Loaiza, also known as Kali Uchis (/utis/ OO-chees), is an American singer. She was born on July 17, 1994. Her first mixtape, Drunken Babble, was released in 2012; it was followed by her debut EP, Por Vida, which was released in 2015. Isolation, Uchis’ first studio album, was released in 2018 to great acclaim. In 2020, Uchis released Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios), her second studio album and her first to be published in Spanish.

The single “Telepata,” which was taken from the album, became Uchis’ first solo hit to reach the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her appearance on Kaytranada’s song “10%” earned her a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Karly-Marina Loaiza was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on July 17, 1994.

In the late 1980s, her father immigrated to the United States from Pereira, Colombia, where he later met Karly’s mother. Her mother is from Virginia and has kids from a previous marriage. The only kid they have together is Loaiza. When Loaiza was a senior in high school, her father returned to Colombia so he could care for his mother, who had become unwell.

Throughout the summer, Loaiza remained in Colombia with her father, uncles, and aunts. Her father referred to her as “Kali Uchis.” On August 1, 2012, Uchis released Drunken Babble, her debut mixtape, shortly after graduating[5]. The mixtape, dubbed “genre-defying,” was notable for its doo-wop, reggae, and early 2000s R&B inspirations.

For his mixtape That’s My Work 3, she co-wrote the song “On Edge” with rapper Snoop Dogg in 2014.On her official website and later on iTunes, Uchis made her debut EP Por Vida available for free download in February 2015. With Leon Bridges, she set out on her first tour in October 2015, travelling across the United States and some of Canada. From January 15 to February 16, 2018, Uchis accompanied Lana Del Rey on a few of her LA to the Moon Tour engagements in North America.In January 2018, “After the Storm,” a song with Tyler, the Creator, and Bootsy Collins, was released as the third single. Isolation was then revealed in March 2018, during Uchis’ visit on The Tonight Show.

 

On April 6, 2018, Isolation made its formal debut across the globe.  The reviews were overwhelmingly positive. It was later decided that “Solita,” which Uchis released in December 2019, would not be the lead single from her upcoming second studio album.

On the album’s vinyl release, the song would be available as a bonus track. On December 9, 2019, Canadian producer Kaytranada released the single “10 percent,” which was taken from his album Bubba. Kali Uchis was a featured artist on the song. The song would later go on to win the Best Dance Recording Grammy Award at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

Later, Uchis appeared on Little Dragon’s New Me, Same Us, their sixth studio album, for a remix of the song “Are You Feeling Sad?” To Feel Alive, an extended play by Uchis, was published on April 24, 2020. The COVID-19 outbreak forced the entire EP to be recorded in solitude.Uchis and American rapper Rico Nasty collaborated on the song “Aqu Yo Mando,” which was released on August 7, 2020.

A prior episode of the HBO series Insecure featured a preview of the song.  Uchis’ second studio album, Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios), is her first to feature primarily Spanish-language songs, and “Aqu Yo Mando” is the lead single.  On October 1, 2020, the album’s second single, “La Luz,” featuring Jhay Cortez, was made available.

On October 26 of that same month, a music video for the song was made available. The pre-order for the album was made available on November 6, and the track list was later made public on November 13. The album’s lone promotional single, “Te Pongo Mal (Préndelo),” featuring Jowell & Randy, was released on November 17.  On November 18, 2020, the album was released, reaching its highest point on the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart.

“Telepata,” from Uchis’ second studio album, experienced a spike in popularity in early 2021 as a result of a lip-sync competition on the social media platform TikTok. The song debuted on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs list inside the top 10 before being released as a single, and it eventually peaked at the top of the chart the week of May 22, 2021.

The song also made it to position two on Spotify’s global top 50 and position three on the US top 50.  “Telepata” reached its apex on the Billboard Hot 100 at position 25.  After the song gained popularity again, Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) was able to chart on the Billboard 200, reaching a high position of number 52. “Drugs N Hella Melodies,” a joint effort between rapper Don Toliver and his girlfriend Uchis, was released on June 18, 2021.

It served as the second single from Toliver’s second studio album, Life of a Don. Uchis and SZA released the single “Fue Mejor” on September 29, 2021. On Sin Miedo’s deluxe version, the song is included (del Amor y Otros Demonios) Uchis revealed that she had finished her third and fourth studio albums, one of which was in Spanish and the other in English, on April 21, 2022, while walking the red carpet at the Latin American Music Awards.

The 1960s’ blend of early soul, R&B, and doo-wop music had an impact on Uchis, who claimed: “Musically and visually, the culture of it really fascinates me.” She added that she likes jazz and said that Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald were her musical influences early in her career.
