Even though the poet Kaveh Akbar didn’t speak Arabic, his father taught him to perform the Muslim prayers in that language when he was a little boy. Arabic was the only language that Akbar’s family ever used while they were praying. He momentarily assumed the form of a different language by imitating the sounds of the incantations.

He learned that he could embody the lyrical beauty of the words even while he did not fully comprehend what they meant. In spite of the fact that Akbar was born in Iran and moved to the United States when he was only two years old, the move presented him with yet another opportunity to pick up English while simultaneously losing his ability to communicate in Farsi. Do You Speak Persian? is the title of a poem that Akbar has written, and in it, he says, “I have been so irresponsible with the words I already have.” I don’t recall how to pronounce “home” in my first language. Neither do I remember how to say “lonely” or “bright.”

Kaveh Akbar Finds Meaning in Misunderstanding: Poetry demands exactly the reverse of such carelessness, and Akbar demonstrates an amazing sensitivity to the ways in which language may operate as both a presence and an absence. Words in his most recent book, “Pilgrim Bell” (Graywolf), take on a tangible, tactile shape — as reverberations in the tongue and ear — but they might just as readily take on a ghostly sheen, reminding us of places and selves that are no longer within our grasp.

The book “The Miracle,” which is written in brief paragraphs in the style of a parable, begins with a story from the life of Muhammad. In this story, the Prophet, who was an illiterate merchant at the time, is visited by the angel Gabriel, who gives him his first revelation and commands him to “read.”

According to Akbar’s version of events, the angel who imparted this knowledge did not do so out of kindness; rather, he coerced the recipient into accepting it against his will by “squeezing out the air of dissent, the air of doubt, crushing it out of his crushable human body.”

Language has the power to enlighten the world as well as ruin an individual’s sense of identity. Because of this, the fact that the poet would not be given any great insights may turn out to be both a blessing and a curse: “Gabriel isn’t coming for you,” Akbar assures himself.

In “the absence of cloud-parting, trumpet-blaring clarity,” the poems in this collection examine what meaning, if any, may be discovered or formed by partial revelation in a world that is so often characterized by misunderstandings: with other people, with God, and with ourselves.

There are instances when there is a literal lack of clarity. If you flip over the pages of this book, you will see formal and stylistic methods that toy with the reader’s capacity to understand them. Because one of the poems is written in reverse, we are required to either read it while holding it up to a mirror or carefully decipher it letter by letter.

The fact that the Persian language is read from right to left serves as a reminder that our concept of backwardness is always subjective. The six confounding poems that share the title of the book are peppered with periods that keep stopping the speaker in the middle of his sentence as if his racing train of mind needs some roadblocks.
