Lita Ford Biography and Career:

Lita Rossana Ford, better known as Lita Ford, is a guitarist, singer, and composer born in the United Kingdom and raised in the United States. She is most known for her time spent in the late 1970s as the lead guitarist for the all-girl hard rock band The Runaways. They were discovered in the rock world because of the punkish tone of their music and the provocative lyrics that they used. The band was unable to attain significant success in the United States, but they garnered considerable recognition elsewhere, particularly in Japan.

Following the band’s dissolution in 1979, Ford had a very successful solo career in the heavy metal genre. She then went on to record two solo albums, the first of which was titled “Out for Blood,” and the second was titled “Dancin’ on the Edge.” Ford just disappeared from the rock scene for a few years after releasing both albums, which did not achieve much commercial success. Her comeback was a spectacular success with the publication of her album “Lita,” which came out in 1988. Both the track “Kiss Me Deadly” and the ballad “Close My Eyes Forever” were very successful in the music industry.

Unfortunately, she was only successful for a brief period before disappearing from the business for several years. She first came back with the album ‘Black,’ released in 1995, and then with ‘Wicked Wonderland,’ which was released over 15 years later. The year 2016 saw the release of her most recent studio album, titled “Time Capsule.” The Guitar Player magazine recognized her as a Certified Guitar Legend and bestowed the title on her.

Lita Ford’s parents, an English soldier and an Italian nurse brought her into the world on September 19, 1958, in London. Her family emigrated to the United States while she was in the second grade, ultimately settling in Long Beach, California, in the state of California. She started learning how to play the guitar when she was 11 years old after being motivated by Ritchie Blackmore’s work with Deep Purple.

At 16, Lita Ford tried out for a female band that consisted entirely of teenagers in 1975. After impressing the band’s organizer, Kim Fowley, she was invited to join the rock band Runaways. The band got a recording deal in 1976, the same year they released their first studio album. Although the band received tremendous accolades from the media and that they went on tour throughout the 1970s, the record did not build up sufficient momentum to be successful.

The Runaways issued four studio albums between 1976 and 1978, but none of them were able to make a significant impression. By 1977, the band was troubled by internal problems, and shortly after, producer Fowley, lead vocalist Cherie Currie, and bassist Jackie Fox quit the band. Cherie Currie had been the band’s main singer since 1975. The relationships among the other group members were strained as well.
Even though singer and guitarist Joan Jett desired for the band to adopt a style more heavily inspired by the Ramones’ brand of punk rock, band members Ford and Sandy West were adamant about maintaining the band’s reputation for playing powerful hard rock tunes. Because neither side was ready to make concessions, the band was finally forced to disband in April of 1979.

Following the Runaways’ dissolution, Ford laid the groundwork for a solo career commencement. 1983 saw the release of her first album under her name, titled “Out for Blood.” The record was a failure on both the financial and critical fronts. The year 1984 saw the release of her album titled “Dancin’ on the Edge.” It was somewhat successful, and people in the rock world began to take notice of her. Both “Fire in My Heart” and “Gotta Let Go” were successful songs that were charted in the top ten rock music charts.

After that, she put her recordings’ management in Sharon Osbourne Management’s hands. She got a recording contract with RCA Records and developed a sound that could be played on the radio. In 1988, she published the album “Lita,” which she had self-produced and which went on to become quite popular. The album contained several hit songs, including “Kiss Me Deadly,” “Back to the Cave,” “Close My Eyes Forever,” and “Falling in and Out of Love,” among others. The year 1990 saw the release of her album titled “Stiletto,” which included hits such as “Hungry” and “Lisa,” both of which were devoted to the artist’s mother. Unfortunately, the record was not a commercial success.

The following year, 1991, saw the publication of her album titled Dangerous Curves. It included the track “Shot of Poison,” her last single to enter the charts, and was included on the album. Her subsequent album, “Black,” was released without significant effect. Between 1996 and 2007, Ford was absent from the music production and performance field. It was a deliberate choice on her part since her priority was to be with her family. She went on to have two children in the years that followed and devoted her attention to raising them.

On October 6, 2009, she released the album under the title “Wicked Wonderland.” JLRG Entertainment is responsible for its production. In May 2011, she vowed to return with an album similar to ‘Lita,’ and she delivered on that promise by releasing the album Living Like a Runaway’ in June of 2012. In some ways, the album was consistent with her previous work, as was promised, yet, it was not commercially successful. In 2016, Ford released an album titled “Time Capsule,” which was unsuccessful in making any impression.

In 2018, she started appearing in an AXS TV series called “The Top Ten Revealed,” which explores various topics in each show episode. The second solo album released by Lita Ford, “Dancin’ on the Edge,” was only modestly successful, but one of its songs, titled “Fire in My Heart,” made it into the top 10 on the charts in several nations other than the United States. Additionally successful on the charts was the track titled “Gotta Let Go,” which climbed to the top of the Mainstream Rock charts.

During the middle of the 1980s, Lita Ford was in a relationship with guitarist Tony Iommi, who was also a co-producer on her album “The Bride Wore Black.” The record and their relationship were doomed to failure, and the album was never published. In the 1990s, Ford wed Chris Holmes, guitarist for W.A.S.P., although the couple was only together for a short time before they separated. In 1994, Ford began a relationship with Jim Gillette, who had previously been the singer for Nitro. After dating for two weeks before getting married, the pair decided to tie the knot. James, born in May 1997, and Rocco, born in June 2010, are the children of the marriage.

They uprooted their lives and went to Turks & Caicos, where Gillette launched a fledgling real estate enterprise. Ford took a break from music for ten years as she focused on her family and educated her children at home for years. During this time, she did not release any new songs.
In 2011, Ford announced that she and Gillette would no longer be together after having been married for 17 years. She said that Gillette incited her boys to physically assault her, ultimately resulting in her choosing to terminate the marriage. In 2016, Ford’s autobiography, “Living Like a Runaway: A Memoir,” was made available to the public. Rolling Stone referred to the book as “Fearless” in their review.

Her battle to succeed in a society dominated by men was described in detail in the book. In addition to that, it disclosed some shocking information on the Runaways. She said in an interview that by writing her book, she had “reopened the wound for the world to see.” She recounted how she was physically assaulted by her hero, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, and how other musicians, who felt uneasy about sharing the stage with a woman, threatened her. She said other musicians were insecure about sharing the stage with a woman.

In 2010, a significant film feature titled “The Runaways” was produced in Hollywood based on the band. Scout Taylor-Compton was the one who portrayed Ford in the show. Ford was also a participant in the documentary “Edgeplay: A Video About the Runaways,” released in 2005. In this film, she discussed how the band management, particularly Kim Fowley, verbally and sexually harassed the band members. Ford was included in this film.
