Matt Groening Biography and Career:
Groening is an American cartoonist and animator who was born on February 15, 1954, in Portland, Oregon, United States. Groening began drawing cartoons at a young age, but he concentrated on journalism while studying at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where he graduated with a B.A. in 1977. Following graduation, he relocated to Los Angeles. While struggling to find stable employment, Groening began making cartoons of a miserably oppressed rabbit named Binky, which he mailed to his friends back home as a commentary on his bleak existence in Los Angeles.
Groening’s cartoons have since become a classic piece of pop culture. His cartoon, entitled “Life in Hell,” was published in the weekly Los Angeles Reader after he obtained a position as circulation director at the publication. Binky’s wife Sheba; their one-eared son Bongo; and the strange and irritable twin roommates Akbar and Jeff were all added later on by the artist.
After releasing his first collection of comic strips, Love Is Hell, in 1984, he went on to print several more, including Work Is Hell (1985), School Is Hell (1987), Childhood Is Hell (1988), Akbar and Jeff’s Guide to Life (1989), and Akbar and Jeff’s Guide to Life (1990). (1989). After more than 30 years, Groening brought Life in Hell to a close in June 2012 with the publication of the final comic. It was released in 2007 that a full-length Simpsons movie would be made. In 1999, Groening debuted a new animated series, Futurama, which follows the exploits of a 20th-century pizza delivery boy who is transported to the year 2999 and his escapades.
It was also infused with Groening’s irreverent sensibility, and although it was canceled by Fox in 2003, strong DVD sales and a successful run in syndication pushed the development of new episodes, which aired on cable in 2010–13. Groening is a member of the Cartoon Network. As a result of his previous work, Groening created a third animated series, Disenchantment, which launched on Netflix in 2018. Following the antics of the hard-drinking Princess Bean and her pals, an elf named Elfo and the demon Luci, in the medieval realm Dreamland, the show was a hit with children and adults alike.
