Nicholas Soames Biography and Career:

Sir Arthur Nicholas Winston Soames (born 12 February 1948) is a British Conservative Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Sussex from 1997 to 2019. He previously served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Crawley from 1983 to 1997. Soames was born in Crawley, West Sussex, and educated at the University of Sussex.

Soames served as Minister of State for the Armed Forces in the cabinet of Prime Minister John Major from 1994 to 1997. He was stripped of his whip on 3 September 2019 for voting against the government, and he was reinstated on 29 October once the whip was reinstated. The military, foreign relations, rural issues, and industry are some of his primary political concerns. He is the grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, the former British prime minister.

Soames was born in 1948 in Croydon, Surrey, to Christopher Soames and Mary (née Spencer-Churchill). He was the oldest son of the couple. He is the grandson of former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, as well as the great-grandnephew of Lord Baden-Powell and his sister, Agnes Baden-Powell, who were the founders of the Scout organisation. Rupert Soames, a successful industrialist, is his brother.

Soames’ boyhood was described in detail by Simon Hoggart, who wrote in The Guardian about the actor “The truth about what I had always assumed to be an apocryphal narrative was revealed to me by him. When Soames was five years old, in or around 1953, he had no idea how significant his grandpa was until he was informed by someone else. Thus, he made his way up to the old man’s bedroom, navigating his way past the valets and secretaries, and found him sitting upright in bed. ‘Does it stand to reason, grandpapa, that you are the greatest guy on the face of the planet?’ he inquired. ‘Yes, I am,’ Churchill said. ‘Now get out of here.'”

Soames attended Eton College for his secondary education after graduating from St. Aubyns Preparatory School in Sussex. Then, he attended Mons Officer Cadet School before being commissioned into the 11th Hussars on 5 August 1967 on a Short Service Commission. He went on to serve with the 11th Hussars in West Germany and the United Kingdom, and later with the Royal Hussars in the Middle East. Soames was moved to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers on March 9, 1970, and he resigned his commission on August 5, 1975, according to his service record.

He first came to public attention in 1970 when he was appointed equerry to Charles, Prince of Wales. He has been close friends with the Prince ever since and was vocal in his criticism of Diana, Princess of Wales, throughout the couple’s separation. Several years after Diana first accused the Prince of Wales of having an illicit relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, Soames told the BBC that the accusation, as well as Diana’s fear of being defamed by her husband’s courtiers, stemmed solely from Diana’s mental illness and “the advanced stages of paranoia.” Soames eventually apologised to Charles for his infidelity, which Charles later acknowledged.

In 1972, he left Kensington Palace and the army to pursue a career as a stockbroker in New York City. Upon graduating from college, he began working as a personal assistant, first to Sir James Goldsmith and then in 1976 to U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield, whom he left in 1978 to become a director of Bland Welch, Lloyd’s Brokers. In the years 1979 to 1981, he worked as an assistant director for the Sedgwick Group of Companies. [a reference is required] In 1979, he ran for the Scottish constituency of Central Dunbartonshire, where he was beaten by Hugh McCartney of the Labour Party by 12,003 votes.

Soames was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Crawley in the 1983 general election. Until the 1997 general election, he represented Crawley in the House of Commons (when Labour defeated the Conservatives in Crawley). In the 1997 election, he was re-elected to represent the Conservatives in the Mid Sussex constituency when incumbent Tim Renton resigned. He served as the seat’s Member of Parliament from 1997 until Parliament was dissolved in November 2019.

Between 1992 and 1994, he worked as a Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, and then as Minister of State for the Armed Forces at the Ministry of Defence under Prime Minister John Major between 1994 and 1997. From 2003 to 2005, he served as the Shadow Secretary of State for Defence.

In 2002, he was assigned to the legislative committee that was debating the upcoming Hunting Act 2004, which would have prohibited hunting with dogs, a policy that he strongly disagreed with. As a result of Michael Howard’s announcement that he would step down as leader of the Conservative Party on May 9, 2005, Soames resigned from his position as a shadow cabinet member.

He co-chairs the Cross-Party Group on Balanced Migration with Frank Field, and he has argued in both parliament and the media that immigration to and emigration from the United Kingdom should be brought into balance. In addition to speaking out in favour of the creation of a national identification card programme in parliament, he has lobbied for them in the national media. In June 2014, Soames met with former Czechoslovak RAF members in Prague, Czech Republic, to discuss their experiences.

Prior to the 2016 EU membership vote, Soames was an outspoken opponent of Brexit. Prior to the referendum, he characterised himself as a One Nation Conservative from the soft right-wing of the party and likened Brexiteers to a “growling Alsatian” who needed to be “kicked in the balls with a hammer.”
