Varun Biography and Career:

Solofa Fatu, Jr. (February 18, 1947 – April 25, 2008) was born to Sr. Solofa Fatu (November 13, 1945 – October 4, 2020) and Elvera Ano’i Fatu (October 11, 1965 – October 11, 2015). He grew raised in the Sunnydale Projects in San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley neighborhood, where his maternal grandparents were pastors. At Balboa High School, he was a member of the wrestling team.

A drive-by shooting in 1982 left Fatu with a scar on his belly; in a 2021 interview, he claimed that he had died for three minutes before he was sent to the hospital. When he was released from the hospital, he moved out of state to live with his mother’s brothers, Afa and Sika Anoa’i, where he began training to become an MMA fighter. As a descendant of the Anoa’i family, Fatu is no stranger to the world of professional wrestling. Both of his older brothers, Sam and Eddie “Umaga,” are also known as “Tonga Kid” Fatu.

In addition to his cousin Rodney “Yokozuna” Anoa’i and his uncles Sika and Afa Anoa’i who wrestled as The Wild Samoans, Fatu also has uncles Sika and Afa who wrestled as Rosey and Roman Reigns, respectively. On October 4, 2020, Solofa Fatu Sr. died of COVID-19.  For the WWE, the names of Joshua Samuel, Jonathan Solofa, and Joseph Solo Sikora are all currently in use. Prince Alofa, a high-flying babyface, was Fatu’s first wrestling job in 1985 when he worked for Gino Brito and Dino Bravo in Montreal’s Lutte Internationale wrestling banner.

He frequently paired up with some of the region’s most well-known faces. After joining the World Wrestling Council in Puerto Rico with his cousin Samula Anoa’i, they were dubbed “The Samoan Swat Team” (Samu & Fatu). In order to portray themselves as “Samoan savages,” the Wild Samoans wore no shoes, never spoke in public, and utilized no-selling attacks to the head as part of their “Samoan savage” act. On November 7, 1987, in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, they defeated Invader I and Invader III to become the new WWC Caribbean Tag Team Champions. Mark and Chris Youngblood took the championship for a little over a month until they left the promotion.

Following this appearance in Texas, Samu and Fatu worked for Fritz Von Erich’s World Class Championship Wrestling. Buddy Roberts hired them to face the Von Erich family and Michael Hayes of the Fabulous Freebirds in his storyline. With immediate support, the SST defeated hometown superstars Kerry and Kevin Von Erich to win the WCWA World Tag Team Championship on August 12, 1988. They were marketed as an invincible force. The Headshrinkers were renamed after Samu and Fatu joined the World Wrestling Federation, but their brutal gimmick persisted.

Assuming the name Yokozuna, Kokina Maximus entered the WWF, but his connection to The Headshrinkers was not recognized. In their first major appearance, the Headshrinker helped Money Inc. defeat The Natural Disasters for the WWF World Tag Team Championship. Later, the Headshrinkers fought with the Natural Disasters and High Energy. Fatu returned to WWF Metal as Rikishi Fatu on November 13, 1999, defeating Julio Fantastico after training at Funks. “Rikishi,” like “Yokozuna,” is a common Japanese moniker for sumo wrestlers.

When he joined forces with Too Cool, he discarded the last name “Phatu” and went by “Fatu.” No mention of his WWF ancestry was mentioned at all. He had put on weight, dyed his hair blonde, and sported a mawashi. Stone Cold was run over by Rikishi on Raw’s October 9 program, and Commissioner Mick Foley utilized a slip of the tongue from Scotty 2 Hotty to indict Rikishi. Rikishi debuted in the WWF on the night of Survivor Series, which was almost a year earlier.

As Rikishi admitted to it, saying that it was to give his cousin The Rock an opportunity for stardom, he insisted that Buddy Rogers, Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, and Austin – “The Great White Hope” – had always been pushed, at the expense of Samoan wrestlers like Peter Maivia, Jimmy Snuka and The Rock. Rikishi then swung his leg around and walked away. Junior Fatu made his debut in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling on the September 13, 2007, edition of Impact! Fatu was defeated in his debut match by Christian Cage on the 20th of September owing to interference by Christian’s partner A.J. Styles.

We saw Fatu and Samoa Joe defeat Christian and Styles, as well as Senshi and Daniels on the October 4th broadcast of Impact!. Fatu and LAX were defeated by Kurt Angle and Team 3D in a six-man tag team match on Impact! on October 11. It was Eric Young who won the Fight for the Right Reverse Battle Royal at Bound for Glory. Fatu participated in the competition. A Fight for the Right Tournament bout between Robert Roode and Fatu was won by Samoa Joe after Roode’s intervention.

It was announced on October 30th that Fatu had been fired from TNA because he and TNA management could not agree on a raise for him. Chris Harris replaced Fatu in the semi-finals of Fight for the Right. Rikishi attended the 2012 WWE Hall of Fame induction of his cousin Yokozuna alongside his family. After defeating Heath Slater on July 16, 2012, he appeared on Raw one more, this time as a commentator. While wrestling, he employed the Samoan Spike and the Banzai Drop as tributes to his departed brother Umaga and cousin Yokozuna, respectively, both of whom he had lost in the same year.
