Shane Lechler Biography and Career:

Edward Shane Lechler, born in the United States on August 7, 1976, is a retired professional football player who punted for 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Lechler spent his whole career in the NFL. He received a football scholarship to Texas A&M University, where he played college football, and was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the fifth round of the NFL Draft in 2000.

During his career, Lechler was selected as an All-Pro nine times and participated in seven Pro Bowls. He is widely regarded as one of the best punters in the history of the NFL. He won the league’s average title five times and is now the all-time leader in the NFL’s career punting intermediate category. Lechler was selected as one of two punters on the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. The other punter, Ray Guy, is a Hall of Famer.

At East Bernard High School, located in East Bernard, Texas, Lechler excelled in various sports, including football, basketball, golf, and baseball. During his senior year, he played quarterback, punter, and placekicker for East Bernard and led the team to the state quarterfinals. He completed 87 of 101 passes (86.1%) for 1,640 yards and 11 touchdowns. During his time at the high school level, he had a career passing total of over 5,000 yards and a punting average of 41.6 yards. During high school, his longest punt went for 85 yards.

Lechler was a Texas A&M Aggies football team member from 1996 through 1999. He attended Texas A&M University. As a versatile athlete, he not only played the role of punter for the Aggies but also kicked off, was the kicker for long field goals, held the ball for short field goals and point after touchdowns, and filled in as the backup quarterback when necessary. As a junior, he completed a pass for 29 yards on a fake punt play against Baylor and tossed a touchdown pass to Dan Campbell on a fake field goal play during a hard-fought victory against Texas Tech by a score of 17–10.

Lechler was elevated to the position of backup quarterback for the 1998 Big 12 championship game due to injuries to other players in the class. At one point in the game, the Aggies’ final healthy quarterback, Branndon Stewart, seemed unsettled, and Lechler threw several warmup passes on the sideline while appearing worried. However, Stewart remained in the game and eventually led the Aggies to a win against Kansas State by a score of 36–33. This victory earned the Aggies their only Big 12 Championship to date.

Lechler was deemed “the team’s most valuable player” by R. C. Slocum, the head coach, because of his contributions in many aspects of the game. When Lechler was a freshman at Texas A&M in 1996, he had a punting average of 42.7 yards, which earned him Freshman All-America honors. He went on to have a successful career. He broke the Aggie single-season record with an average of 47.0 yards per punt during his sophomore year, which led to his being chosen to the All-Big 12 team at the end of the season.

As a junior in 1998, he was selected for the All-America team by The Sporting News. The following year, as a senior in 1999, he was honored with first-team All-American honors by the Associated Press. That year, he averaged 46.5 yards per punt, which is second in the record books, only behind his sophomore record of 47.0 yards per punt. With a 44.7 yards per punt mark, he holds the record for lifetime punt average in the NCAA. He set this record.

In the first game of the season, a road triumph against the Kansas City Chiefs, which Lechler’s team won 27–24, the punter had four punts for 185 net yards (averaging 46.25 yards per punt). Two weeks later, when the group played the Miami Dolphins on the road, he had a season-high seven punts, 345 net yards, and an average of 49.29 yards per punt. The team lost the game 18–15. After three weeks, in the game against the Indianapolis Colts, Lechler punted five times for 262 net yards, averaging 52.4 yards per kick in the team’s 23–18 win on the road.

He was nominated for the Pro Bowl for the first time. Lechler kicked off his sixth professional season with a defeat on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 24–21. He punted three times for 132 net yards and an average of 44 yards per attempt. He kicked the ball seven times for a season-high 333 net yards and an average of 47.57 yards per punt when the team played the Denver Broncos in Week 6 and lost 31–3.

In the game three weeks later against the Carolina Panthers, Lechler punted three times for 167 net yards, and a season-high average of 55.67 yards per punt in the road win. As the season ended, he had 73 punts for a total of 3,409 yards, good for an average of 46.7. The Raiders concluded the year with a record of 5–11. He was selected to the First Team All-Pro for the third time and received a nomination for the Pro Bowl for the second time.

In the first game of the season, which took place on September 8 against the Denver Broncos, Lechler punted five times, averaging 51.0 yards per kick (255 total net yards). On November 9 against the Carolina Panthers, he booted 11 times for a season-high 556 net yards, averaging 50.55 yards per punt. This was his best performance of the year. In the second game of the divisional series against the Denver Broncos, which took place on November 23, he punted three times, totaling 176 net yards and averaging 58.67 yards per punt, which was a season-best.
