Shawn Bradley Biography and Career:

Former professional basketball player Shawn Paul Bradley, better known as Shawn Bradley (born March 22, 1972), is a German-American former center who played for the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, and Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association. Bradley was born in Hamburg, Germany (NBA). Bradley, who stood 7 ft 6 in and was nicknamed “The Stormin’ Mormon,” was one of the tallest players in NBA history (2.29 m). Although Bradley’s family was stationed at the U.S. Military post-medical facility in Landstuhl, West Germany at the time of his birth, Bradley grew up in Castle Dale, Utah. He is a dual citizen of the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany. Bradley was disabled after being involved in a cycling accident in January 2021.

Bradley was riding his bicycle near his house in St. George, Utah, when he was hit from behind by a car on January 20, 2021, resulting in traumatic spinal cord damage in his neck that rendered him immobile. Bradley was born with a traumatic spinal cord injury. Bradley was already 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) tall by the end of his junior high school year (age 13–14), and by the end of his junior high school year (age 16–17), he had grown to 7 ft 5 in (2.26 m), just one inch short of his adult height of 7 ft 6 in. Bradley was born in the United Kingdom (2.29 m). In 2018, a genetic analysis of Bradley’s DNA revealed that his extraordinary height was not the result of any physical or genetic disorders, but rather was the result of inheriting an extremely rare combination of the thousands of common genetic variants that determine the human height that he happened to inherit. A farm outside of the little town of Castle Dale, Utah, was the setting for Bradley’s upbringing.

They were brought up in the Church of Christ, Latter-day Saints, and he and his siblings are members of the church (LDS Church). Emery High School from 1987 to 1990 was the home of Bradley, who was a talented basketball, football, and baseball player. He finished his high school career as one of the most accomplished basketball players in Utah high school history, averaging 20.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.4 blocked shots per game across his four-year career. During his career at the school, Emery had a 68-4 record and won two state titles in baseball.


Bradley was chosen to the All-State team three times and was voted the season MVP on two separate occasions. For the season, he averaged 25 points, 17 rebounds, and 9 blocks per game in his final season. Many national magazines, including Parade Magazine, Street and Smith, USA Today, and others, recognized him as a top performer and named him an All-American. During the McDonald’s All-American Game, he had a remarkable performance, scoring 12 points, grabbing ten rebounds, and blocking six shots, earning him the Most Valuable Player award for the West squad. Braden Bradley was widely sought by several schools and universities around the United States, but he finally chose to play for Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. During his rookie season (1990–91), he started all 34 games for BYU, averaging 14.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game on his way to the Mountain West Conference Championship. However, his primary contribution to the squad was shot-blocking, as he led the whole country in both total blocks (177) and average blocks (5.2 per game), establishing an NCAA freshman record in both categories as a result of his performance. Bradley blocked 14 shots in one game against Eastern Kentucky (EKU), matching the NCAA single-game record established by Navy’s David Robinson in 1986.

Bradley’s 14 shot blocks were the most in the history of the NCAA. Bradley also set a new career-high with 29 points in the same game, which was his first time doing so. Bradley took a two-year leave of absence from Brigham Young University from 1991 to 1993 in order to serve as a full-time missionary for the Latter-day Saints (LDS). He had been sent to the Australian city of Sydney. After returning from his mission, Bradley made the decision to forfeit his remaining three years of NCAA eligibility and enter the NBA Draft.
