Sigourney Weaver Biography and Career:

Susan Alexandra Weaver was born on October 8, 1949, at New York’s Leroy Hospital. The daughter’s father, TV producer Sylvester L. Weaver Jr., named her Flavia after his love of Roman history (he had already named her elder brother Trajan). Elizabeth Inglis, a British actress, gave up her career to raise a family. Sigourney grew up in a guiltless bubble, surrounded by nannies and servants. By 1959, the Weavers had lived in 30 homes. Sigourney started at Brearly Girls Academy in 1961, but her mother sent her to Chapin in New York.

Sigourney was taller than most of her peers (by 13, she was already 5′ 10″), so she became the class clown to obtain their acceptance. Her family moved to San Francisco in 1962, which she disliked. They later moved to Connecticut, where she attended the Ethel Walker School, suffering the same issues. Her given name, Susan, was in honor of her mother’s best friend, explorer Susan Pretzlik, and she changed her name to “Sigourney” in 1963.

In 1965, she worked with a stock troupe, appearing in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “You Can’t Take It With You” (she didn’t star in the latter because she was taller than the lead actor!). She spent a year in a kibbutz in Israel after graduation in 1967. Then she got engaged to reporter Aaron Latham, but they split up. Sigourney began studying English Literature at Stanford in 1969.

She also performed in school performances, particularly Noh plays. She was living in a treehouse with a guy companion, disguised as an elf! But her teachers refused her because of her height, repeatedly casting her as prostitutes and old ladies despite her reading a Bertolt Brecht monologue and donning a rope-like belt (whereas classmate Meryl Streep was treated almost reverently).

In 1973, while performing in “Watergate Classics”, she encountered a group of playwrights and actors with whom she formed lasting connections, including Christopher Durang, Kate McGregor-Stewart, and Albert Innaurato. In 1974, she played Jenny in Aristophanes’ “Frogs” and Durang’s “The Nature and Purpose of the Universe”. After graduating that year, she seriously considered a stage career, but her height was a barrier. Innaurato (in “Titanic” [1975]) and Durang (in “Gemini” [1976]).

A Flea in Her Ear, The Constant Husband, and Conjuring an Event were among the 1970s theatre pieces. But it was “Das Lusitania Songspiel”, a play she co-wrote with Durang and appeared in for two seasons from 1979 to 1981, that made her famous. It was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. In the mid-70s, she starred as Avis Ryan in the soap opera Somerset (1970). As Shelley Duvall in Annie Hall (1977), she turned down the job due to existing commitments. In the end, Woody Allen handed her a six-second role in the picture that made many people sit up and pay notes. She starred in Madman (1978) and Alien (1979).

Sigourney became an “overnight” star after playing the harsh, uncompromising Ripley. In the same year, her uncle, actor Doodles Weaver, committed suicide. That year she began dating Jim Simpson, her first since breaking up with James M. McClure two years before. She married Simpson on October 1, 1984. Sigourney had appeared in both Deal of the Century (1983) and Ghostbusters (1984). (1984). Her performance in “Hurly Burly” was nominated for a Tony Award. Then came One Woman or Two, Half Moon Street, and Aliens (1986).

Sigourney was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her role in the latter.  She lost both, but won both Golden Globes, partially making up for it.
