Sunil Chhetri Biography and Career:

Sunil Chhetri is an Indian professional footballer born on August 3, 1984. He is now the captain of the Indian national team and the Indian Super League club Bengaluru FC. Chhetri plays as a striker for both teams. He is renowned for his ability to connect with teammates, score goals, and provide leadership.

He is the third-highest international goalscorer among active players, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, and fourth overall. He is also the most-capped player and the all-time top goalscorer of the India national team. Because of his many accomplishments on the field and his dedication to the cause of Indian football, he is considered by many to be among the sport’s all-time greats.

After beginning his professional career in 2002 with Mohun Bagan, Chhetri moved on to JCT, where he played in 48 games and scored 21 goals. In the 59th iteration of the Santosh Trophy, which took place in Delhi, Sunil was a member of the Delhi squad. During the competition, he was responsible for six goals, one of which was a hat trick against Gujarat.

The quarterfinal encounter between Delhi and Kerala was another one where he scored, but Delhi was eliminated. In 2010, he became the third notable player from the subcontinent to play professionally in another country after signing with the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer. He returned to India’s I-League, where he played for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan, before going back abroad to Sporting CP of the Primeira Liga, where he played for the club’s reserve side.

Chhetri was an integral part of India’s victories in the Nehru Cup in 2007, 2009, and 2012, as well as the SAFF Championship in 2011, 2015, 2021, and 2023. He also led India to victory in the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which qualified them to their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years, scoring twice in the final tournament in 2011.

Chethri guided Bengaluru FC to a second-place finish in the AFC Cup in the 2016 season. Additionally, Chhetri has been awarded the title of AIFF Player of the Year a record seven times, most recently in 2021–22. These are 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018–19, and 2021–22. Chhetri was honored with India’s second-highest sports honor, the Arjuna Award, in 2011 for his remarkable accomplishments, and India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri Award, in 2019.

In the year 2021, he was presented with the Khel Ratna Award, which is considered to be India’s most significant sports distinction. He was the first footballer ever to get this award. After playing for the City Football Club of New Delhi, Chhetri debuted in the National Football League with Mohun Bagan. Mohun Bagan was Chhetri’s first team in the professional ranks. After his first season at the club, which was the 2002–03 campaign, he was released.

Mohun Bagan had ended in seventh position in the standings thanks to Chhetri’s four goals, which he had scored. The following year, Chhetri was only able to achieve two goals. Mohun Bagan once again ended in the bottom half of the standings, in ninth position, as the first loss came against Sporting Goa, and the second loss came against Indian Bank.

Chhetri then had another season in which he scored just two goals, and that season was 2004–2005. During that season, Mohun Bagan placed eighth in the league, and they stayed in the National Football League due to their superior goal differential. Chhetri inked a contract with JCT for the 2005–06 season 2005. Chhetri scored three goals throughout the season.

JCT ended the season in sixth place that year, and he contributed to that finish by scoring three goals, two of which came in a match against Salgaocar and the other two coming against Sporting Goa. During this time, Chhetri scored hat-tricks for Delhi in the Santosh Trophy. In the group stages of the 61st Santosh Trophy, Delhi faced Orissa and Railways. Chhetri scored a hat-trick in each of these games. However, despite Chhetri’s best efforts, Delhi was eliminated in the pre-quarter final round after losing 1–0 to Tamil Nadu in extra time.

Before the 2008–09 season began, Chhetri signed with fellow I-League side East Bengal. On his first game with East Bengal, which was on September 26, 2008, against Chirag United, he scored in the 28th minute, and East Bengal went on to win the match 3–1. East Bengal defeated Chirag United. After that, Chhetri scored an essential goal for East Bengal during the Federation Cup. He scored the lone goal his team needed to win against JCT, which was his previous club.

Which resulted in East Bengal securing a spot in the semifinals of the competition. During the semifinal match, East Bengal took on arch-rivals and another of Sunil’s former clubs, Mohun Bagan, in which he missed the decisive penalty in the penalty shootout as East Bengal was officially knocked out of the tournament.
